    Site search problem.

Quite a few times I've had problems using the site search, in particular because it does not accept three letter words. So if I try to search for, "Ash Bow", "Yew Bow", "Axe", etc., it won't produce any results. Also, question words aren't accepted either, so phrase queries like "which knife"...

    Pig Sinew???

Is pig sinew any good for general sinewy type stuff? Logically, I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't be, but then, I don't think I've every heared of it being used for anything. Also, does anyone know if pig sinew has any specific uses, historical or otherwise. Pappa

Anyone recommend "Mammals of Britain: Their Tracks, Trails and Signs"

Hi, Have any of you got the book "Mammals of Britain: Their Tracks, Trails and Signs" (0713705884 or 0713704349), and if so, is it any good? Thanks, Pappa

    Ray Mears' Tracks.

I just found this BBC programmes database. It appears that there were four different series of tracks, titled, "COUNTRY TRACKS", "WILD TRACKS", "TRACKS" and "RAY MEARS'S COUNTRY TRACKS". I understand now why many people here seem to remember it by different names...

    Five year old tracker.

I've tried to show my five year old son the basics of tracking a few times before, but he's never really shown much interest. Yesterday, we all went on a circular walk across some local farmland, taking in a burial chamber along the way. Part way through, we were walking through some long grass...

Cramp balls for horse hoof fungus

I have about 20 Cramp Ball fungi (King Alfred's Cakes) of various sizes ranging from 1-3 inches in diameter that I'd like to swap for a horse hoof / tinder fungus. Please PM me if your interested. Pappa

How many knives and/or axes do you own?

For a little amusement, I thought it would be nice to find out how many edged tools we have. For the sake of completeness, I suppose it's best to include all your crook knives, flint knives, and ony other oddities you may have. Pappa

    Naturally leavened bread experiment.

I've been doing a bit of reading about naturally leavened bread (using no added yeast) recently and I thought I'd try a few experiments. I prepared two starters: 250g (15 Tbsp) Strong Wolemeal Bread Flour 175ml Brecon Carreg Mineral Water Then I added 4 tsp of melted Pure Welsh Honey...

    Which Axe

I'm sure this question's been asked before, but the forum search won't let me search for the phrase "which axe", or the word axe. I'm looking for a small, portable axe, and I was wondering if you could recommend one. I don't mind shelling out a bit more for good quality. Pappa

    Tannin and Oak Apples

I was watching "Tales from the Green Valley" a few days ago. They mentioned that Oak Apples (galls) used to be collected because they have a very high concentration of tannin. They used them to make ink in the episode.

    Growing Fomes fomentarius

Hi, I know a lot of you are interested in getting your hands on some Tinder fungus, and as it's restricted to certain locales in the UK, it can be a bit tricky to get hold off. Anyway, I've bought myself some Fomes fomentarius 'plugs' from a US website. I'll be trying to grow it on cut...

    Rewetting wood???

I've been carving my first spoon from a piece of elm and as the wood has dried it has become increasingly more dificult to carve. I was wondering if it's OK to soak it in water for a while to make it more 'green'. Pappa

    Birch Polypore as coal extender

Hi, I've just been experimenting with some Birch Polypore (Piptoporus betulinus). I lit a piece of King Alfred's Cakes (Cramp Ball) and used it to light a piece of Birch Polypore by pressing the two together and blowing. The Birch Polypore was glowing and burning within a few seconds. I...

    Birch Polypore ID

Hi, I found this fungus growing on a dead standing birch, with perhaps another 10 fruiting bodies on the same trunk. They all appeared to be identical except for a few of the fruiting bodies which had died back. The dead ones were black and shriveled underneath rather than white and fleshy...
