What do you want to have on Bushcraft UK?

  • Hey Guest, We're having our annual Winter Moot and we'd love you to come. PLEASE LOOK HERE to secure your place and get more information.

This was something I raised on the suggestions forum a while back, but I think needed more than just me to build it as it’s a mammoth task.

I’m a fan of iterating these sorts of things and just getting anything at all going to get us started and then build from there. Something is better than nothing.

If @Tony is happy for me to do so then I can get cracking and people can join in. Maybe an appropriate forum area, which I believe Tony suggested? Then we can mess around with formats for it and see what works.

I believe Mr Fenna was looking into it -, not that I volunteering him , it is a very large task - but all big tasks start somewhere.
Maybe start a thread of ideas to be contributed ? I'm sure everyone can chip in an idea.

My own suggestion - Show a Photo of boiling water in a leather boot .

( I'm not letting go of that story. I'm having it included in part of my eulogy )

When I joined I was still fairly active but nearly 20 years later age has slowed me down so I very much value the vicarious experience that members ' trip reports provide me. They remind me of many of the things used to do and frequently trigger happy memories.

I'd like to see more examples of the next generation being helped on the path to love of the outdoors and to self reliance.

Similarly, I enjoy photos of places visited and activities happening. The monthly photo competition is a particular joy although I hate choosing between the entries and only do so to show support.

Ive been here some years now and not got out much.

And I now have a job...but that is in the Iron Age.

(Memo; must photo my new tunic with making diagrams)

Im exactly the same, post to Flickr or email it to myself from my phone, then post here on the PC
Thats the thing with gen X and earlier. We weren't born to it. we didn't have it, then it progressed until we did. So we had to learn every stage in its development over the last 30 years or so. Old dogs, new tricks and all that :D

For me the internet has changed a great deal & it makes forums much more difficult to attract new people into. The rise of social media means people can tailor what they see on Instagram or YouTube without needing to pay to share pictures or video. Me, I would like to see more people doing. There's a chap I follow on Instagram who makes wooden buckets. He couldn't get the right rope for the handles so built a rope walk out of wood - gears, the lot. It was amazing! Another chap restores Vardos & carts. In my head, rather like the "homestead" sub forum it all intersects. If we can attract fascinating people like those, it creates interest & discussion. But perhaps it is too off topic?

I like the idea of the Bushcraft lessons - but I am not volunteering to organise it :) My IT skills are very poor (I only use 2 fingers to type!) and just do not have the IT or People Skills to cope - I will support the idea but leave a better operator to organise it all :)
There are reasons that I do not post often :)

When I say "support" - that could include posting the odd lesson (making/sewing stuff) and if I could figure out how to record passes/failures, even assessing the various attempts made by folk to try the skills...
I do not make videos so that might limit my contributions, as would not being good at paperwork, spreadsheets and such....

John Fenna's idea of a collection of short notes, pics or videos on doing some basic (or not so basic) things in bushcraft probably would be a good thing. In fact there would be quite a collection of such if somebody had the time to go through all the existing ones in the forums and put them under one headline.

Thanks for all your suggestions and thoughts so far, keep them coming.

Some are straight forward to implement, others not so but all are appreciated goodjob

How do people feel about the 'like' button? A useful feature, or something which could prevent actual discussion? Or a bit of both?
I quite like it as it allows me to acknowledge someone’s post without a “I agree” post.
As I use the new posts feature I find it saves looking at a thread for a acknowledgement post.

I also see it as a bit of a diffusion feature, where a disagreement has started I find liking the opponents post shows it’s been read and not taken personally.

I don't necessarily think it needs to be as huge as that (altho big would be cool if we can deliver!)

We could pick a theme per month: fire, shelter, water, biodiversity etc and get to 12 essentials in no time and then break it down. It could be as simple as

MONTH 1 - fire.
Beginners: make a fire, any fire
Advanced: show us your fire making process. What do you use? What do you do?
Expert: make a fire but only with X materials and y tools. It must be raining.

It just needs to drive engagement, and create conversation, and with an open topic thst makes participants the star of the show.

If you wanted to be more fancy, Mors K has that book with the curriculum in tho I couldn't easily find it. And we could also work through the tasks of a bushcraft qualificstion together, of which there are several options. Thst means we don't have to put too much time and thought into design.

It is actually something, 18 euros =about two days worth of food for me as being unemployed.

But about this topic; I would like to see a whole lot more photos.
Perhaps you didnt read what I wrote. I said its nothing and if you can afford it then why not. i think thats fair comment. x

I think we had a discussion on this 15 years ago, and the consensus then was that it wasn’t a good idea as people would just click on that rather than replying as they do on FB. I think that’s true. Not sure it offers anything really. Nowadays it’s evolved and people crave it as affirmation.

I do use the like button, but often respond as well. Assuming i have time anyway. I normally use it when i'm on my phone, as i hate typing out more than a few words on it. I'll reply properly when im on the pc. If there wasn't a like button, i'd just wait until i could reply.

Love it! A quick acknowledgement when I have nothing extra to add.
If it were possible I’d like the addition of a “Thanks” quick emoticon. I use the “Like” at the moment.

There is a thanks emoticon in the file but all too often other posts have intervened. The rapid dial buttons attach to the post and are much more immediate. Also the accumulation of likes and loves is very affirming, more so than a series of posts scattered through the subsequent traffic.

Believe me, if I had extra text to add I’d be adding it!!!!!
