There's an expanded hardback version that has pictures. I agree it's a great book.

I'm glad this thread got bumped back up again. It reminded me to highly recommend a book called Survival by Martyn Forrester (ISBN 0-7221-3588-2)

Littered with pratical advice about how to do such a such but interspaced withsome very gripping and well written accounts of people put through some harrowing experiences of personal survival... which obviously includes a lot of Bushcraft orientated stuff. Sadly the book isn't illustrated but the author wirtes so clearly it really doesn't need them.

Just found it on Amazon at this URL http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/0722135882/ref=sr_1_1_olp?ie=UTF8&qid=1309066743&sr=8-1&condition=used

Can't rate this books highly enough as a unputdownable read. It's what got me started off down this path all those years ago. Lofty Wiseman's book just reinforced it.

Chronicles of the Ancient Darkness.
A series of six books tells a story of Torak and his adventures with his wolf and friend Ren. Set back in a time when we were still hunter gatherers. Full of bushcraft and adventure. Theres a rumour the first book will be made into a film.

The first book "wolfbrother" is on itunes as a audio download read by Sir Ian Mckellen. Its great in the car on a long journey.

The best iv ever read (The last frontiers man) heimo korth as a trapper living with his family in north alaska on the old indian river colleen , he is still their today ! he nearly died few times when he started off & lost his child to the river he loves very sad but its a great laugh to as he`s funny i.e when asks his father in law (respected eskimo hunter) if he can marry his daughter edna the reply is not for one million dollars il give my edna away! in a year later it only took a moos leg , 2 stinky dried fish & wolverine pelt ! lol To see how hilariouse these two are go to youtube , (far out) while tv crew are interviewing heimo edna ( eskimo) wanders over & grumbles at heimo for coming into the floorless cabin with dirty boots in the boosh! oh the black the black embarrising him funny a must read my favourite but read alone or you`l be mistaken for insane as tears will flow with laughter & sadness.
I also recommend call off the wild (guy grieve) the guy done well so to speak chainsawing huge trees for a first & putting up with the extreme temperatures , also a laugh a well respected huge eskimo bushman ( DON) takes him under his wing but slags the hell out off him as a tenderfoot ! tells guy evry man must have a dog out in the bush around here & the day off departure to go build the cabin don arrives with the dog FUZZY its a scream! a poodle half bread who wont go into boats & but jumps out , covers evry thing in muck & has a high pitch shrill bark , when told to fetch ducks it runs away 20 miles away out in the bush from his cabin what a lauf LOL ! guy hides nothing writes it well with lots off humar another must . wilderness & people living the dream at its best as simple as that ! .

Not bushcrafty, but the name Robert Twigger earlier in this thread reminded me of a book of his; "Angry White Pyjamas" about his time in Japan learning Yoshinkan Aikido from Gozo Shioda himself.

Laugh out loud funny in bits and very informative.

I know it's more of a children's book, but Brendon Chase by BB has always been a favourite of mine

Even better, also by the great 'BB'... Lord of the forest..all about the life of an oak tree and the things that go on around it... my first edition would definetly be on my shortlist if I could only keep half a dozen books.

Also.. any of Jim Corbetts classics.. available as modern reprint omnibus editions.

Also... 'The Mad trapper of rat river' and 'Descent into madness'.... two gripping tales of RCMP manhunts many years apart.

Also...there are several good books and dvd's about the NZ deer cullers....if you think you're a 'can do - no worries' hard man, think again these boys have forgotten more about self reliance than most of us will ever know!

"Selkirk's Island" by Diana Souhami. It tells the story of Alexander Selkirk, the inspiration for Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. As is so often the case with these things, the truth is actually a lot more absorbing and interesting than the fiction.

Thanks Tiley. The story of Selkirk has always interested me since I first read "Robinson Crusoe" as a child. So on the basis of your recommendation I bought the book on eBay (signed by the author I have just realized) and finished it last week whilst away on a trip. I really enjoyed it, thanks for the advice!

one of the Original bike adventures is one Man Caravan by Robert Edison Fulton Jr

Robert Fulton's legendary journey began in 1932 when he set out on his Douglas twin motorcycle for an eighteen-month odyssey that included Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, India, Sumatra, Malaysia, Siam, Indonesia, China, and Japan -- challenging destinations that, even today, would give pause to the most world-weary traveller. His customised bike had an extra large fuel tank, a secret hiding place for his .32 revolver, and enough room in his luggage for a motion-picture camera and 40,000 feet of film. His entertaining, detailed story tells of falling from a bridge in Turkey, being held up by hundreds of robbers in Waziristan, put in jail as a smuggler in Indonesia, and being escorted across Japan by 33 motorcycles. You will discover a fascinating part of our world that's been lost forever.

INDIA THE SHIMMERING DREAM by Max Reisch, translated by Alison Falls (Panther Publishing, £12.95 )

This surprising book is an account of the first motorbike trip (made in 1933), through Iraq, Iran, Pakistan (then called Baluchistan) and into India, by the 20-year-old Max Reisch and his travelling companion Herbert Tichy. Reisch went on to have a successful career as a travel writer. The book has never been out of print since it was first published in Germany in 1949, testament to the enduring appeal of Reisch's youthful and forceful narrative, combined with a strong sense of empathy with the people and cultures he encountered. Reisch's boyish enthusiasm for the road makes this a pacy read, as well as providing a colourful insight into Middle Eastern cultures during the first half of the twentieth century. The challenges of travelling by bike are prominent, and make for entertaining reading. -- Sunday Telegraph, April 18, 2010 by Clover Stroud

Ok, husband just read The Long Walk - he told me it was incredible, but half way through it he said that it must be fiction, as some of the events were just too staged to be a true story......anyone know if it IS a true story, or something that was elaborated upon?

Much discussion on the internet about it. I think true in principle in that similar walks seemed to have been completed but there are some discrepencies between this acount and actual records.
