I use WhatsApp to verify ages before I send knives. I request a photo of a passport or driving licence - read the dob - write the following back in a message:
" I have seen the image of your identification and the date is blah blah blah"
I then delete the photo for gdpr reasons but the proof I checked remains in the message.
I will only dispatch to the named person and to the address shown on the Id in the case of a driving license. I use an age verified service obviously too.
If they do bring in a video check too I think I'll just request a video with them showing the id and speaking their dob - I really think it's overkill but I'd not want to get in trouble by not following rules.
I was a Detective Constable in the Met and Surrey police before I left to pursue my knife making. So if I did get in trouble believe me the magistrate would most likely crusify me to make an example of me.
My business is way more about my experience days now and I make significantly less knives due to time. I do wonder whether those will also come under fire and some kind of conditions however I only deal with over 18s for those courses. All of these conditions of sale are likely heading towards eventual licensing imo - I think in time I will save knife sales for face to face sales at events like the sharp show for my collectable knives and do a very rare postal sale when I do occasionally release a custom piece.
The government continue to legislate against knives rather than do anything to solve the socioeconomic/socal issues that lead to knife crime.
Nothing will change in our favour - laws only work on law abiding citizens - the scrotes going around with weapons and the inclination to use them need to get real hard time when caught with a weapon and even more hard time for any use or threatening behavior.
Even if a complete miracle happened and knives were swept off the streets and out of the hands of people seeking to harm each other something would replace them - be it a sharpened bicycle spoke, a sock with coins, a makeshift shank of whatever materials (CDs snapped in half used to be a favorite when I was still in the police)
All we can do is be responsible and not bring the legitimate use of knives into disrepute.
