most people start with a mora when you get one and you go out and use it you will be able to find out what you want out of a knife its good points and its failures hope this is a bit clearer for you regards dave

Its funny how "survival" is no longer a dirty word :)

We did go through a "bushcraftier than thou" phase, when the most important thing was to ensure one indulged in an activity that was seen to have absolutely no future relevance. Even the hint that what we do may, at an inderminant future time, be needed, was enough to get you excommunicated from the "in crowd"

It is a much nicer place now that such silliness is no longer the "lingua franca" :)

hi mate, might be worth popping along to the bushcraft show and handling a few knives, but the fallkniven f1 looks like it might suit your needs, the chap behind "naturalbushcraft.co.uk" uses one for bushcraft and its a pilot's survival knife. Who says bushcraft and survival aint the same thing? :) also if you check out duel survival on you tube you'll see a chap named cody using a £10 ish mora and his mate joe using a leatherman or similar. Also joe sometimes uses a knife he designed, you'd have to check out his website for details but much different than a mora. also check out "equip2endure.com" lots of reviews on there for all sorts of survival type knives (that can also be used for that totally different type of cutting wood and preparing food that is bushcraft ;) ). Hope this helps.

Why not just offer a few ideas of survial type knives for the chap, 'ey? keep the 'whatever you have at hand' bs to yourself. The dude wants to spend some cash on a new toy, and asked for our advise on a few. options..

For £100 or under there are some great options mate, I wouldn't bother with anything costing more than that as you'll probably be worried about abusing/using it hard.

As has been said already, the MOD knife is decent at cheap at £50. probably the toughest knife out there untill you go custom! needs a litte sharpen job but it's a ebast after that.

For even less, at £30 you can get a Cold Steel bushman knife. Super tough and very lightweight for a solid metal knife! hollow handle too that can be stuck on a pole for spearing or filled with 'survival' stuff ;)

again this knife is tough! it'll handle almost anything and doesn't need any work out the box!

or for the higer end of that price range, the Ka-bar adventure potbelly is pretty cool. Now I don't currently own one, but I've heard alot of great things abotu it's chopping ability and tough blade!

This one goes for just under £100 I think and will be one of my next purchases!

hope that's the sort of info you were looking for mate! :)

Bear grylls ultimate survival fine edge awesome all-rounder bud £53 to your door, I've smashed he'll out of mine, hammered nails in with the pommel it's awesome. One problem with it when out the box it's blunt and needs work to bring it round .a very versatile knife I use for carving spoons ,feathering sticks ,etc it has onboard sharpening grid a fire steel, great for skinning small quarry .Maybe this is the knife you may want to try but only you can decide bud BUT at this price I don't think you can go wrong. There is two up for grabs in the swap shop grab one of them before they get snapped up.
Good luck with the search bud

The lairy colours on BG stuff actually works well to show up in undergrowth
I had an ultra compact one to play with a while back and although I went into it wanting to dislike it my atttude was definitely changed by the end of play time.

Not one I'd want for crafting but if I was makin up a small grab bag or the belt pouch survival kit from sas survival book by lofty I would most definitely include the ultra compact

I dont realy distingish between fixed blades myself

my only thoughts on a survival kife aside from being and staying sharp for the tasks i'm likely going to need it for is that its easy to care for in the field (clean and sharpen), comfortable to use all day long and light to carry.

been playing with the condor range most recently and have settled on their kephart, for £40 from heinnies it wont break the bank either

did a little work on it to make it my own :D

Why do knife manufactures and makers make kepharts that look like that? The kephart NEVER looked like that until it was worn down after a lifetimes use. It didnt have a spear point, it had a drop down edge with a belly. :)

because they can ;)

WHy do manufacturers and makers insist on making that kephart as the one he promoted later in life was massively different in design so either the product of years of exp changed his mind an this design was no longer best in his mind ...or he got paid a wedge by a knife company to promote what they made :lmao:

:D I just wonder how a knife can be called a kephart, when it doesnt look like one :) Thats like me calling my SPB-1+ a woodlore :D It just aint :)

Now Im biased ... massively:cool:

but for survival emergency i would recommend my DSK (now yes i make it) as its concept and design was done by some very very experienced modern day survival experts as a carry everywhere emergency almost disposable knife
