You people do all this outdoor stuff and we have to put up with yet another snowfall last night.
Are plans for a shave horse easy to find on line?

Mesquite: Just a note = I read a year ago that Seville oranges are not good like grapefruit for people on Statin meds.
I just made a batch of lime marmalade, to be on the safe side!

For those who might try:
Very fine slice a dozen big limes. In plastic, glass or porcelain, soak overnight in 7C water.
Bring to a boil then simmer 45-60 mins to cook the lime peel.
Add 1kg sugar (original recipe says 2 kg) stir to dissolve and cook again, with gentle stirring 45-60 mins.

The whole batch may turn a bilious, nauseating yellow. Stir in 1 drop blue food coloring. Fairly realistic.

This should gel nicely. Into jars and process. I preheat my jars to 250F and load on a tray (if one breaks).
I've boiled the lids, rings are ready. I got nearly 10 x 250ml this time. Depends on evaporation in cooking.

I have a book called "Shaving Horses and Lap Shaves and Other Woodland Vices" by Sean Hellman :)

However, this is the basic sketch I drew up to make my first one using a 150mm (6") ash log split in half. Next time I'll use a wider log :)

Thanks, Broch. That is so cool.

Do you suppose that I could make the basic bench slab from a bunch of cedar 4x4 fence post?
I can buy it straight from a local mill.

4" itself is too narrow but, if you could saw it in half and bolt or dowel it, 8" x 2" would be ideal as a base. However, there is a 'Continental' version of a shavehorse (called a dumbhead) that can be made using two 'rails' with a gap down the centre. Here's an example, but there are simpler versions around:

The Iron Age hillfort where I work gave us work to do at home... my projects include making a net from natural fibers, experimenting with casting with aluminium from old cans, reading all the works risk assessments, reading The Mabinogion and learning some of the stories for story telling at the fort etcetc
The netting is coming on well... I am using tarred sisal as it is the only natural fiber I have in good amounts. As you can see from the size of the mesh, it is meant for catching whales and tourists...

I like that , going to make one.

Ref the Casting using Alu cans.. what is the intention behind that as its an Iron Age Fort?? Just wondering really. All sounds very interesting stuff regardless.
I think it is to give visitors an idea of how metal work was performed... but with easier to source and work materials than iron or copper or bronze....:)

Oooh… I hope you have the version illustrated by Alan Lee. I confess I have never managed to read Culhwch and Olwen all the way through word for word; I just can't manage the pages of names when Culhwch invokes his boon in the name of Arthur's warriors :) - otherwise I have read the whole translation. I must make myself sit and go through it!
