I pulled my frying pan out from under the fire tray at the weekend and found that something had been helping itself to some fat from the sausages.

What is not quite visible in this picture are tiny smeared paw prints in the greasy surface top right of the frame.

Jonathan has a pretty good idea what it might be but what do you think?

I'd say rat, had one get into my kitchen once and have a go at the butter dish*. The tooth marks look the same.

*duly trapped and shot.

Got to admit, when I first saw it on the camera screen on Sunday, I thought it was the pattern of a birds tail feathers that had landed in the pan. It's very symmetrical.

Could be a birds beak scooping it up? I've had all sorts after fat - particularly robins. I would have to say it does appear to be a pair of incisors....

Bank vole?
