What sort of things should I pack in a wash kit for my bergan, and should I bother with a solar shower for weekend long trips?
I guess the basics would be something to wash with, something to shave with, something to dry with.
Anything else?

Don't bother shaving unless you need to..

Toothbrush and paste.

Wet wipes are always handy.

Make sure your soap is environmentally friendly.

For a towel I use my Shemag.

  • Alohol gel for toilet stops and before prepping food.
  • Travel pack of baby wipes.
  • Travel towel (Sea to Summit make some good ones)
  • Biodegradable soap - doubles up as washing up liquid
  • Travel sized tooth paste
  • Folding too brush
  • Packet of travel tissues

As an extra, my pocket sewing kit always lives in my washkit, that way I always have it with me. Needles, thread, duct tape and spare buttons etc.

HTH?

Mine contains:
- Toothbrush and paste
- Pine tar soap
- Alcohol hand disinfectant
- Comb
- Alum deodorant stick
- Razor (I prefer to walk out of the woods looking tidy!)
- Small pack of tissues
- Small bottle of talcum powder (keeps foot rot away)
- Shemagh as a towel

I wouldn't bother with a portable shower, if you want an all-over then empty a billy can over your head :)

I bought a webtex washkit because it came complete with all the bit and a nice stainlessteel mirror.

For cleaning my teeth though you cant beat OralB Brush Ups. Basically think finger mouse covered in tooth paste.....

They aren't much, but more expensive than tooth paste. Great for the ultralight hiker.

I would suggest that you carry a small nail brush, both for keeping your nails and knuckles clean and for scrubbing your collar and cuffs. :)

Sod shaving, but I do carry a cut throat razor, ( if need be, I can shave without lather ) and steel mirror along with toothbrush and powder, oh, also a pertex towel and a wide toothed comb. My wash kit contains my sewing kit also. Good idea about the tick remover though, have to get one of those, as I had a tick in a very personal place, found by attending to personal hygiene. That was about the time I had recently read about Lymes disease, And no, I wasn't streaking through the woods, F@%& knows how it got there, but I worried for weeks.

It actually fits into one of those little first aid kits. It just sounds a lot when it's written out.
It's simple economies of scale, but it makes a huge difference to comfort.

I hate carrying a heavy pack so I just don't.

cheers,
Toddy
