Naaah you haven't wrecked it. There was me imagining you'd filed so much meat away the axe blade had fallen off the shaft eye. But like has already been said so long as it does the job why worry?
Hmmm sound advice about forcing a patina on the blade. I just give the ones I restore and sell a coating of black polish that we use over here on our cast iron woodburners. Seems to do the job until they're able to develop a patina of their own through use.
Anyway nice mod, it's looks very retro now, like something out of the 1800's.
