If they came out with an updated version of it, I’d get that in a heartbeat.
There are plenty of better games out than that now JD.

Checkout Ghost Recon Wildlands for example, its single player, and massive, brilliant game, i've played through it several times.

But I want to be James Bond and shoot folks :ar15:
Then have a scroll through here, there are loads,

Turns out they did do another Goldeneye in 2011, called Goldeneye Reloaded.

I have mixed feelings on video games.

Mentally I don't think they are good for men , young or old.

Emotionally however I used to enjoy them - although spent far too much time playing them whilst I should have been doing something else.

Final Fantasy in my 20s.
More recently WOT.

And I have a very strong love affair with the Fallout series

Not played anything for a very long time however.

Yeah, they’re all utter crud, the Bond games. Including the new Goldeneye.

I’ve seen loads of first person games and none of them appeal to me at all. They just got something right with the original GE that no other game has replicated. Perfect Dark came close-ish. I liked the controller configuration too on the N64.

TBH, other than Goldeneye, i can't remember playing any other Bond games. That Wildlands i mentioned is a 3rd person affair, and genuinely an excellent game.

Final fantasy 7 was an excellent game in its day.

Damn, that's back in the first playstation/PS2 days wasn't it? Before online gaming... when it was just you having fun vs the scripted bots? Things have changed. Oh how its changed... Now you fight turbo charged adhd kids over dosing on red bull. lol. THe reactions some of these guys have are unreal, to the point you're convinced they cheat, but most of them dont... they just are that quick and good, i'd kick their bottom in real life, 100% of the time, but get my bottom handed to me on a regular basis online lol.

edit, apparently forum sortware changed A.s,s to bottom by default. Come on mods... A.s.s isnt too bad... we all have one... Its probably less offensive than a.r.s.e and i would never refer to it as 'bottom'. That's an insult to my vocabulary.. :D we're all, for the most part, adults here aren't we? Given the nature of the forum regarding knives, axes etc, which you ned to be 18 to buy/sell, surely the odd word or two which are neither insulting or derogatory can be allowed?
I can imagine, it’s just not my bag i reckon and I’d last literally seconds against these kids. I’ve not the patience for it either.

Games have the same affect on me as golf. I enjoy them but just know that to be satisfied with my performance I would have to put in more hours than I'm prepared to waste; there's too much to do and not enough time (at my age anyway) :)

I played the first version of Elite when it came out (BBC Micro, 6502 based computer) and, by playing into the early hours, I reached Elite status! I've tried playing the current PC version but, to be honest, it didn't have that 'Frontier' feel and I got bored.

Properly old school gaming ( 1984 ) and a ground breaking at its time. So good they reproduced it with upgrades in "Elite -Dangerous" - ( 2014. )

If you're into the space based stuff, there's always Eve online. Its a very good game, absolutely massive, but a big time sink. Its quite unique amongst PC games, there really isn't anything like it. It certainly has that 'frontier' feel. Frankly, its absolutely mental. I've got 2 accounts on there, that i play simultaneously, or did, not been back on in maybe 3 years....

When factions go to war in Eve, battles happen with literally thousands of players going at it. Think the biggest battle recorded have over 5000 players involved and literally cost nearly $400,000 of destroyed ships. ( once a ship is destroyed, its gone)

Watch the vids, they're only short, especially the 2nd one.

Didn't play Elite, but did play the Commodore version of it - Mercenary - ahhh vector graphics

If you use a PC and have Steam, Mini Metro is a great little filler game.

It's making a really basic train line system with increasing risk of catastrophe! It's pretty clever but nice and simple.

Speaking of Bond games...

One of my favourite Game Boy games back in the day.

I'm a very intermittent/occasional gamer nowadays but I like to know what's coming out and watch reviews of games. The three I'm interested in this year are Atomfall, Crimson Desert and Avowed. Loved PoE and PoE2 so I really hope Avowed is good.

I was never much of a gamer, i think the last games i played and completed were Tomb Raider2 and COD2, played The Last Of Us for a little while.
I used to be a gamer. I quite fancy giving it a go again but my TV doesn't have the right socket (all HDMI) and I no longer have a tape deck to install the games. I do still have the other bits for the computer though. BTW it is the best gaming computer of its day, the Sinclair Spectrum 48k edition. I have the cables, the power pack and the games on original tapes and a few "backup copies" ahem.

Are there any true retro gamers out there from back in the day? How do you find the games hold up now?

PS on a more modern note, I used to play a lot of games on my son's switch with him. Minecraft was popular before that mario cart 8 and the fighting game with all those other nintendo games characters. We also got minecraft dungeons and I used to play that with my son in a team game. Also on one holiday in the down time we completed that game with that fluffy character that absorbed the powers of whateever it could swallow.

More recently our son went onto a gaming pc and he is doing FIFA, Forza and fortnite which he is the best among his friends. I can not even keep up with the speed of him playing at times. It is amazing to see him jump down from a great height, snipe someone that I can not see on the way down then switch to hand weapon to hit the ground and avoid dying. Something like that anyway. Before every edition update he generally ends up with over 30 odd crown wins in open competition or whatever that is called. He has taught himself a lot on how to create and fight on fortnite plus when he is not on it he used to watch videos to get ideas of new things. He started on console and was beating PC fortnite gamers before he got his gaming computer (about £800 for the desktop and we spent something just over £1k for everthing needed with the desktop, like gaming desk, headphones, mechanical fast keyed keyboards, gaming mouse, etc)

I quite fancy looking for a secondhand console to get into gaming. Any recommendations? What should I look for to get into cheap gaming? I like open gaming where you can go anywhere. We played breath of the wild and wished it was a two player. I liked to team up with the boy on games. I have a bit more strategy and idea how to defeat monsters for example but he is the one who can actually do it. I am too slow at gaming but I do understand what to do quicker than most so together we make a decent team. He might not like it now though being 12 and having lots of friends online and IRL.

Our son started with that fortunatly but still complains at times that it is too slow. He quotes something like CPS figure as evidence that he is being let down by poor tech and needs an upgrade. He has got over that phase a bit and has not mentioned it for some time now. I think he just got better so it was less of an issue as it was once.

When you go through fortnite players as easily as he does I guess you kinda settle with the tech even if you might bee better with better. PS I am speaking as a 50yo parent who simply can not keep up with his speed of play. I have no idea how good he really is but to my POV (as a spectrum gamer of old) it seems like he plays at a thousand miles an hour!! It is telling that very few of his friends now play fortnite, they have moved on to other games that they know he is not allowed. We draw the line at GTA and other older rated games for him but his friends have older brothers so have those games to retreat to.

Probably because most Fortnite players are young children who haven’t got a clue what they’re doing. I tried it a few times, it’s just full of kids! Not for me at all.

As for the thousand miles per hour thing I really don’t think that is healthy for young people in terms of processing and brain development. It’s no wonder they don’t get stimulation in the real world and lose interest in things, it must seem really slow and boring away from all the lights and flashing. I’ve spent the last almost twenty years working with young people and definitely noticed a difference in these behaviours recent years.

Definitely not trying to do you or your son down, just general observations and food for thought.

I'm not sure that's entirely fair TBH. There was a recent study that showed playing computer games was mind-developing - probably not at the addictive stage though I agree. As far as my GS is concerned, all that speed of response is transferred to the real world - I have to work pretty hard these days when we're sparring quarter staff and short stick :)
