My nephew is certainly way more hyper and intense when he’s been playing computer games. I’m sure it’s not the case for all, and most probably depends on how much time an individual spends.

Sparring is high speed though, opposed to more low key activities. I’d be interested to see if there are any studies indicating either way.

Ah, you're forgetting the mindfulness and spiritual side of sparring - we meditate before we fight some times :)

There's no time for that when gaming and I've never been able to 'relax' in an intensive game like I can in real life.

I used to be a gamer. I quite fancy giving it a go again but my TV doesn't have the right socket (all HDMI) and I no longer have a tape deck to install the games. I do still have the other bits for the computer though. BTW it is the best gaming computer of its day, the Sinclair Spectrum 48k edition. I have the cables, the power pack and the games on original tapes and a few "backup copies" ahem.

Are there any true retro gamers out there from back in the day? How do you find the games hold up now?

PS on a more modern note, I used to play a lot of games on my son's switch with him. Minecraft was popular before that mario cart 8 and the fighting game with all those other nintendo games characters. We also got minecraft dungeons and I used to play that with my son in a team game. Also on one holiday in the down time we completed that game with that fluffy character that absorbed the powers of whateever it could swallow.

More recently our son went onto a gaming pc and he is doing FIFA, Forza and fortnite which he is the best among his friends. I can not even keep up with the speed of him playing at times. It is amazing to see him jump down from a great height, snipe someone that I can not see on the way down then switch to hand weapon to hit the ground and avoid dying. Something like that anyway. Before every edition update he generally ends up with over 30 odd crown wins in open competition or whatever that is called. He has taught himself a lot on how to create and fight on fortnite plus when he is not on it he used to watch videos to get ideas of new things. He started on console and was beating PC fortnite gamers before he got his gaming computer (about £800 for the desktop and we spent something just over £1k for everthing needed with the desktop, like gaming desk, headphones, mechanical fast keyed keyboards, gaming mouse, etc)

I quite fancy looking for a secondhand console to get into gaming. Any recommendations? What should I look for to get into cheap gaming? I like open gaming where you can go anywhere. We played breath of the wild and wished it was a two player. I liked to team up with the boy on games. I have a bit more strategy and idea how to defeat monsters for example but he is the one who can actually do it. I am too slow at gaming but I do understand what to do quicker than most so together we make a decent team. He might not like it now though being 12 and having lots of friends online and IRL.
Get a 2nd hand PS4 and check out the Ghost recon Wildlands i mentioned, that's open world, do what you want kinda game, but with missions you can chose to do anytime.

You can also get these things these days that just plug into your TV and have pretty much all the retro games on them. Over 50000 on the upper end one, and all for around £50.

Our son started with that fortunatly but still complains at times that it is too slow. He quotes something like CPS figure as evidence that he is being let down by poor tech and needs an upgrade. He has got over that phase a bit and has not mentioned it for some time now. I think he just got better so it was less of an issue as it was once.

When you go through fortnite players as easily as he does I guess you kinda settle with the tech even if you might bee better with better. PS I am speaking as a 50yo parent who simply can not keep up with his speed of play. I have no idea how good he really is but to my POV (as a spectrum gamer of old) it seems like he plays at a thousand miles an hour!! It is telling that very few of his friends now play fortnite, they have moved on to other games that they know he is not allowed. We draw the line at GTA and other older rated games for him but his friends have older brothers so have those games to retreat to.
Not cheap for a top end gaming PC these days, 3 maybe 4 grand. Mine cost me £1800 to build it myself, it would have cost over 3k to buy one to that spec and that was in 2017. Its out of date now, not quite obsolete but getting there. Then theres the internet connection speed... apparently you need like 500 mbps these days....

Probably because most Fortnite players are young children who haven’t got a clue what they’re doing. I tried it a few times, it’s just full of kids! Not for me at all.

As for the thousand miles per hour thing I really don’t think that is healthy for young people in terms of processing and brain development. It’s no wonder they don’t get stimulation in the real world and lose interest in things, it must seem really slow and boring away from all the lights and flashing. I’ve spent the last almost twenty years working with young people and definitely noticed a difference in these behaviours recent years.

Definitely not trying to do you or your son down, just general observations and food for thought.
Might be true if that's your only thing. My son spends most of his time in the playing fields getting muddy or up the side of the knitting where they found a zip line hidden away that someone put in along with a shed den and other things. He's into football and martial arts. Plus always wanting to go to the nearby campsite to the swimming pool with his mates for a swim and 10 pin bowling session. In fact he's only home when it's dark or in the morning while he's waiting for his mates to wake up and say they're off to the park or other place in the village.

When he's at home he's gaming, social media, TV streaming and chatting with mates on phone or in game. The speed of his mind you see coming out in martial arts and also football. Whilst not the best player he's got a quick reaction and touch, plus he reads the game better than more skilled footballers in his team. When he wants to of course.

I once knew a child development researcher, dad of one of my kids friends. It was when kid's use of technology was hitting the news as being a big problem for their development. They were talking of TV, tablets and computer use. However this guy worked in a respected research unit in the field of technology and child development. Apparently the effect is overrated and overreacted to in terms of significance by media. For example he told me of a new piece of research he'd just had published about the effect of the widespread use of tablet and TV use on the development of reading skills. His research said that such tech use had next to no effect on development of reading skills if they read for at least 15 minutes at home as well. That was early years education based study.

Fortnite does appeal to kids but don't count that against them. There's some pretty good gamers who are kids. Locally they seem to be 8ish up to 16 or older judging by the local kids our son plays with.

I got my old PS3 up and running again, but I have the best intentions of getting stuck in but rarely do. Games I have put out to have another go at are Fallout3, The Last of Us, Driver 2.

iPad. Alien:Isolation is very atmospheric, so is Resident Evil, and recently found a huge ROM download site for ALL the Nintendo and PS1 games so have Super Metroid and Super Mario Brothers on the go.

Can’t stand online gaming, it has to be a complete single player game unless it’s a driving or combat game. Haduken!

My first computer was a ZX80 and now i have a XSX and a pc. I always build pc's myself and that is part of the fun. I have played from pong, carmageddon, ultima online, leisure suit larry, halflife 1 and 2 etc. Latest games i liked are Forza, GTA online, Sniper elite and COD MW3 zombies.

I do have Hunter:Call of the wild. I play, if being really bad counts, intermittently. I mostly wonder about and have bought some DLC, I like the vistas.

Not a big online gamer as I don’t like the attitude of some. I just want the immersion of a story that I don’t get from most film and TV.

I do get to annoy my offspring on Halo, Gears of War and such. I am told I am a sneaky *******. Job satisfaction.

I have just been messing with Boltgun for that 1990’s era nostalgia. Plus delivering the Emperor’s mercy to Heretics…

I have that, loved it, but got bored of it trying to get the golds. Ended up hide shooting Geese just to level up, even got good at dropping them with a pistol when i ran out of shotgun ammo, Just to finish the flight off,. Did enjoy the lever actions for Boar and Roe though.

You dont like online gaming... unless... lol. Same mate. I need a mix of both. SIngle player campaigns are what i relax with, online combat type stuff is good too, but i do get annoyed with them from time to time. Mainly because im rubbish and old (relatively)

I do enjoy the odd evening salt mining though.
