    Question for wood gatherers

So I have access to some fallen trees and boughs but they are not accessible with a vehicle, the wood will need to be taken up wooded slopes etc. My question is what is the easiest way to extract the wood, to carry it out bit by bit will be a herculean task as it has to go uphill. Any ideas...

    Knives

OK so I got to thinking about knives - again. Forget the best compromise to get the best all rounder in one knife, this is what causes all the debate and differences of opinions. Rather than looking for this holy grail of knives how about looking at it a different way - without any compromises...

    wood spirits

I have seen pictures on here of carved wood spirits and metnion that they represent good luck. They have been carved on living trees, bits of branches, walking sticks etc. My question for those that are up on the folk law surrounding them, is there any where or any place you should not carve one...

    Graphics Tablets

Well just got one, Wacom Intuos3 A5 size, idea being to use it with photoshop and autocad etc. Anyone else use these devices to manipulate/work on images ? I have got to get used to it yet, but my first impressions are very favourable, you get a pen and mouse that can be used on the surface to...

    Canned Mushroom

Well not exactly, but today saw this, it looks like a shaggy parasol growing in an old hollow rusty 45gallon oil drum.

Does anyone know what pignut seeds look like and what is the best way to collect them ? I think I have identified some pignuts and they are seeding, I have taken some pictures below. This morning in my garden

A grey squirrel appeared on the back lawn, he was digging up hazel nuts he'd burried about a year ago, he had a nibble and then reburried them in the rockery. Then a thrush appeared with a snail and proceeded to bash it open on a rock in the rockery. Nice morning.:D

    drill bits any ideas ?

I just recently bought a very old (1940 ish) twist action awl drill, the sort with a twisted metal shaft and a hand piece that you work up and down to rotate the drill bit clockwise and anti-clockwise. The drill bits seem a bit unusual they are square shanked and taper to a sort of chisel point...

    IKEA strikes again

Look what I've just been given by the wifes sister, apparently most shops sell them, they are sold as hot pot stands, somewhere to stand hot pots when you take them off the cooker. It had 4 clip on plastic feet that I have discarded as I see a very nicely made grid for an open fire. Bit on the...

    My new torch

Just bought a new Jonta freeplay torch, it has a 1/2watt high output led and a big wind up handle to recharge the batteries, also comes with a mains charger you plug into the torch. It's a bit big and heavy but according to the blurb I will never need to buy any more bulbs or batteries. The...

    Legs for my hobo stove

Yes, having seen several of these on the forum I just had to make one, but not totally happy about stability. So decided to make some legs for it, didn't want to have to spend time assembling etc so I came up with the following idea - see photos below. The legs are not attached, the hobo sits...

    Seeking advice re carving

Have just recently tried my hand at carving, using Mr Frosts clipper and crook knives, really enjoyable and pleased with results but my left thumb is suffering. I am right handed and use the left thumb against the back of the blade to either push while the workpiece is being pulled or use it as...

    Knife Sharpening

Anyone interested in knife sharpening might want to look at some experiments carried out by a university in the US, they tried different methods and have pictures of the knife edges taken under a scanning microscope. It is in the downloads section...
