Cooking grills used on fires?

Hi,
Can anyone recommend cooking grills for open fires? I have seen custom ones but none commercial. They are the sort where the legs fold open and there is a mesh/plate top for bbqing.

I will be feeding 4 people and I have a place where I can use a fire so the trangia doesn't need to be used.

I had one from Merlin via BCL, they are very good, not that big but fine for one big pot or two medium pots. At that price, buy two or three and line them up?

Shop around as you can get them cheaper than this though.

I have one and like it alot, but it may be a bit small for 4 though.

Alternatively, buy a cast iron griddle and support it on bricks or logs. I've seen Bodge do this at meets and it works well.

How about a simple wire cake cooling rack? they weigh next to nowt and are fairly flat so should be easy to pack and carry. Four stones on each corner or between a couple of logs will give you a simple standoff over the fire, or maybe use some old tent pegs as legs. You should be able to pick them up for pennies.

I've been thinking of using the pan hobs off and old gas cooker.
I may even have foldable legs added to them.

How about the grills from cheap 'kettle' bbq's ? We butchered one of these to make the grill for over the oil drum fire pit that warthog1981 made to use under the parachute.

With respect to anyone who has one, do not buy a grilliput !. Some time ago, they were on offer in milletts, at half price, but they are in my opinion rubbish, i made my own lightweight one, but if you want a grilliput, you can have mine for the postage !.

Not sure Ed, certainly a gallon of stew was not a problem at all. The Grilliput is crap, tried one, sold it. At a fiver why mess with oven grills etc, these off Merlin fold flat, do the job and as I said at the price buy more than one as stop messing about with some home made bodge job?

if its for pans use two pieces of flat bar ( 2" wide 5mm ish thick) can support any width of pan, hammer 'em flat if thay bend.

I've rescued and salvaged any number of grills from barbies in skips and the house etc. They range from 20" dia to a 9"x4" cracker which ideal for a single fish!

But that idea of the metal door mat from MartinK9 is an absolute corker. (is there a problem with galvanized ones burning nastily?)

The bars on oven grills are too widely spaced for barbequing

I have to agree there, I had one for a bit.
Cant see the point of collapsing it into the tube, when a rectangle bbq grill or cooling rack, fits flat against the back of a rucksack anyway, in a cloth bag. Also there a pain to fit together a a messy job all round.
Pricey too.

if i'm on my own i use 3 tent pegs in a tripod shape in the ground and build the fire around it. but i am planning on 'borrowing' one of the oven racks when i go camping with a few mates for the communal stew.
