Hi guys,

Before you turn away - there is no money being asked for here!

I organised a speaker to come along to my club last night and give a talk, all I can say is wow! As the title says, truly inspirational. The founder of this charity has been dealt 2 terminal, incurable lung diseases. She is making it her mission before she dies, to get an extra 10,000 people signed up to the organ donor list.

She is asking for no money, but literally 5 minutes of your time to help save 5 lives in the future! If you decide to do this, then please make sure you visit her website and follow the instructions. If you go direct to the transplant list, her tally does not increase! You still get directed to the official NHS site, but you must email her personally as that is the only way she can know numbers.

I know a good few people give blood. I personally may not be here if it wasn't for these people. My mum has had a liver transplant 5 years ago, she would not be here if it wasn't for people on the transplant donor list! This really does make a difference and will affect many lives. If she gets 10,000 people signed up - that is a potential 50,000 lives that can be given, changed or even prolonged (and that's not even counting family, friends that will benefit from extra time with a loved one).

No replies needed, just please have a peek at the site and if you want to save some lives, please sign up to the list. The way I see it, when I die i'll just sit in the ground rotting - or I can donate and saves some lives. I know other people will think differently, but i'm not really asking for a slagging match or any flame wars.

Cheers guys,

Ben

Would you take an organ if you needed one? Most of us would but only 28% of us have joined the online Organ Donor Register. More than 10,000 people in the UK currently need a transplant. Of these, 1,000 die each year – that is 3 a day.

Save5 is all about asking people to register online or to check that if they have already registered their personal details are up to date so that in the event of death, their organs and tissue can potentially be used to Save5 other lives.

I would, but I'm already a registered donor.
Personally I'm all for implied permission, where you need to carry a card saying you opt out of donation.
No card? then the organs are available for transplant.

Thanks guys. Opt-out instead of opt-in makes more sense. Maybe one day hey...

She was saying last night, even if you have the little card in your pocket - it may well be void. If you have moved, got married or changed your name, it is recommended you sign up again. Don't worry though, I don't think they'd be asking for two hearts, two livers, hee hee.

Thanks again... :)

As far as I'm concerned, the entity that is "me" inhabits this body (a rather handsome example, I hasten to add...). When I die, whatever is/was "me" no longer lives there so they can recycle what they want and dispose of the rest however they see fit

Exactly. But some people don't think like that unfortunately. A big one is the eyes, they say take everything buy my eyes!

Did you just sign up or you already on the list?

Details amended and message sent!

I am going to pass on the details to the Organ- Transplant Co-ordinators in my unit and our Corporate Comms folks and see if we can send an email out to our entire hospital to help spread the word.

Cheers for the link!

I agree- op-out is the best way.

Also, as well as making sure your details are accurate, make sure your family know your wishes: AFAIK even if your on the register, your NOK need to give permission, or certainly, the medical staff won't go against their wishes if they say no!

While eminently philantropic not everyone does agree; either to donate, or receive, organs and tissue from another.
Rather than raise so many objections, negativity, emotional blackmail, etc., etc., and cause real rifts, it's much simpler to have opt in commitments.

Please bear this gently in mind when promoting the idea.

regards,
Toddy

I believe people should opt in rather than opt out.
That way if you are not on the list you will not receive an organ donation

Hi

Just for information, The opt-in / opt- out thing only covers donation.

Receiving an organ is not covered by a register etc. indeed, if you become so unwell so rapidly that you need a transplant without your consultation and express consent, you are almost certainly too ill to actually receive one.

There is of course the "waiting list" for those requiring an organ, but names are added to that list only after lengthy discussions between patient and various specialists, +/- tests/evaluations etc.

I totally understand Toddys comment, and do not disagree actually - It is a complex and emotive subject to say the least. My own personal opinion about opting in comes from the assumption (not fact as I have nothing other than a strong feeling) that there is probably a fair number of folks who are not against donating, but never quite get round to registering, whereas if you feel strongly enough you do not want to donate, then you are more likely to register your preference. I am always happy to be corrected however- life is about learning after all.

Like I said earlier though, in my limited experience, families are asked at the appropriate time and even if their loved one is on the register, if they say no then that's that.

It is a difficult subject and if any offence or upset has been caused, it is unintended and apologies for that.

I'd sign up, but I'm already signed up. That said, I'm making sure to tick the box on my driving licence when I send it off to be replaced.

Just a quick update from T, thanks to you guys...

You are right to assume that some people have signed up as a direct result of you mentioning Save5 on the various forums. A huge, huge thank you to you. Just to let you know that the figure this morning at breakfast was 2,017 and now it is 2,027!!! Thank you.

If you have previously signed up to the donor register, you may want to check your details. The system doesn't work effectively if you have changed your name, married or moved address. Please sign up, re-register and/or check your details. So many people mean to sign up but never get round to it, and sadly good intentions aren't an adequate replacement for a heart or liver. Please consider this a gentle reminder - literally 5 minutes of your time has the potential to save 5 lives!

Spread the word if you can, i'd love to help as much as I can :)
