Not batonning at the time I did that. I was just cutting through a pine bough and hit a hard knot and twisted the blade three times, as I didn’t realise it was causing damage until I’d finished. That was one of Stu Mitchell’s. He did a couple of high grinds for me at that time and the edge is a bit more delicate to the lower grinds I’m used to, and it was also 01, and I mostly use RWL. It was originally slightly convex, yeah. To add insult to injury, I was later on the latrine pit and the knife and sheath slipped off my belt right into the fresh duty.

Gonna have to start calling you Calamity John, lol... Sh-t happens though mate, eh? :D

Pine knots can be a right pain, i've chipped a GB SFA in one once when it was sub zero temps.. damn stuff turns as hard as glass.

01 shouldn't have chipped so easily though. Its still tougher than RWL, though not by much. Depends on the HT i guess. If aiming for a finer grind, the HT has to be adjusted to suit the grind... not by much, but needs dropping a point or two on RC or you'll find it a little brittle as in this case i guess.

What's the handle? Looks like bone/mammoth?? Was it greenish to begin with or has that developed over time?

Keep up HillBill; it's green 'cos he dropped it in the s**t :)

It wouldn’t usually happen, I was just tired and impatient. But the edge on that knife was a bit too fine. The handle is dyed giraffe bone. I had a great supplier of some of the finest giraffe bone in all sorts of finishes, so I’ve got knives that are almost pure ivory coloured, to these green and even black ones. Because the slabs are so thick on my knives, it’s always been a pain to get samples thick enough.

What works for me is an affordable and unglamorous Mora chisel knife - perfect for batoning, feathering sticks, levering bark off, even as a chisel. I can bash it about without guilt and save my nicer knife for nicer things.

I tend to go for chunkier handles too. They need the width at the top to take to the pressure off the hands for harder use stuff. If you get a chance, you should try one of my Eagle handles, you'd probably like it. I use the same handle design for my bushcrafter too, which in fairness, isnt too dissimilar to yours, Just not as deep in the blade.

And Im sorry Poppy had negative experiences, (we all ribbed her, didnt we?)

But, places like this depend on folk being mature enough to take banter.

Or, at least tell us when we are going too far.

---

Reminds me of a person saying "Oh, Id like to go to Scotland but I have heard they tease us English folk a lot"

They dont really, but being English in Scotland, I do think you need a certain thickness of skin...

Everyone needs a thick skin. Especially online... but it transfers over to RL easily enough or vice versa.

I remember Tony once congratulated me for yet again, having impenetrable skin lol. (conspiracy kinda thread)

No. Most people enjoyed her contributions and she had great interaction with 99%. She’s also quite capable of handling herself. She’s her own person and always will be. And she doesn’t care if people find that weird. She will also just walk away if she finds people annoying and won’t look back. I’ve never known a 17 year old as independent as she is. She cooks her own dinner most of the time and makes my lunch before she leaves for college or work. Went out and found her own job at 15 to pay her way through college and Uni. It’s not her maturity I’d question. It’s the maturity of the few people that were much older that took pleasure in trying to put her down. She handled them with far more certainty and confidence than they obviously have - if they feel threatened by a self assured, experienced and knowledgeable 14 year old.

If someone as confident as Pops can’t be bothered with the attitude some gave her. How are less confident kids just starting out without any experience or knowledge freshly joining up on here going to feel. It’s not up to the person being targeted to say when it’s too much. It’s the responsibility of the much older people to know how far to go. She was 14. There’s the problem. There are no young people on here any more as far as I can see.

I still pop my head in but rarely post these days so mea culpa.

Over the last twenty years my fitness has declined somewhat. I don’t get out as much as I used to and the nature of my interest in camping has changed as well.

My photography has become more studio based so not out in the landscape as much anymore.

Most re-enactment societies won’t let me play because I need glasses now so that is not something I do much anymore.

I still take the occasional trip to the Arctic but that has to fit in between bookings for my business.

Most of my camping is done now with the Steam Tent Co-operative where I can play with traditional old fashioned kit as much as I like and nobody cares that I need glasses.

I also seem to have developed a bit of a lantern habit but that is another story…

I have made many good friends on this site and it opened up opportunities that I never imagined possible when I joined such as the Arctic trips. For that I am eternally grateful.

The changes in the “social media” landscape have certainly had an effect, I post much more regularly on FarceBook these days which reflects the wide diversity of my interests. Perhaps that also satisfies a need for instant gratification as well but it is where my attention has shifted to.

Someone mentioned the pictures issue. I used to get around that by hosting pictures on my own websites but as the server protocols change then many of the links have been broken and the content of my old posts has been depleted. I used to go back and update all the links but it is far too big a job for me now.

I don’t even post much about Bushcraft on FB these days as there always seems to be some Johnny come lately that pops up to tell me I don’t know what I’m talking about because some teenager on YouTube knows better.

I used to live here but became embroiled in knife comp debacle after which I was required to change my name(was Southey) move to the LA underground, now living as a soldier of fortune. If you have a thread that needs sidetracked down a rabbit hole, if you want useless inainity typed at the speed of a thousand gazelles and if you can find him, maybe you can hire.......The Idiot. (Cue A-team music).....did I leave my coat here?
