I used to live here but became embroiled in knife comp debacle after which I was required to change my name(was Southey) move to the LA underground, now living as a soldier of fortune. If you have a thread that needs sidetracked down a rabbit hole, if you want useless inainity typed at the speed of a thousand gazelles and if you can find him, maybe you can hire.......The Idiot. (Cue A-team music).....did I leave my coat here?
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I'm good mate! Live in Scotland now working on a sporting estate, how are you? Other than busting out your lovely choppers here.
Good work if you can get it. I did a shooting season on a pheasant estate in N. Yorkshire back in the autumn/ winter of 04/05. Just a keepers assistant getting some work experience in so i could do a countryside management course at Bishop Burton in Beverley ( i wanted to be a Gamekeeper). Never ended up happening as i needed accommodation and there was 2 year wait for that. Loved it. But sadly not to be, met a woman, had a kid and life moved on.

What do you do where you are? (Edit, just saw your other post. Deer estate then? Nice mate. Very nice.)

I'm good mate, few niggles here and there but nothing that causes too much trouble anymore. I don't make as many knives as i used to. I've seriously limited the commission work as it burnt me out after a decade or so. I do the odd few, but mainly make what i fancy making these days. Most of it sells, i'm happier for it.

You have the pony...with a game saddle?

My friend wanted one to use as a generic pack for her nag; the quotation from the saddlers was.....big.

So I helped her make a pack out of two rucksacks...Though I have no doubt there are better ways.

Hi Tengu, we use a Glen Strathfarrer saddle with our Garrons, another leather type I know of is the Glen Quoich but I've seen a chap nit far away use 1"x 1" staves crossed over a padded leather blanket very simple looking.

Hi Paul. Yep, I can do that no problem. That’s a promise. And thankyou.

That far north you’ll just be looking at the Common lizard. You probably saw a mixture of juveniles and adults. The colouration can vary between the sexes, especially around the breeding season. It’s far too cool that far north for any invasive species to be thriving. They mainly stick to the south coast.
What confuses me is that some were big buggers! I thought some were way too big for native species. I think the largest lizard in the UK is what 15-20 cm? This one was bigger than that I thought. I used to see the common lizzard a lot in the Lakes around Kentmere way on the path to Longsleddale bothy. It always surprised me how they didn't seem to mind the boggy terrain as much as we did!!

I wouldn’t rule out a non native. I used to get called out to stuff on heaths that would make your man bits crawl up into your body. People let stuff go, thinking they’re not being cruel. So they do this into environments in the Summer that seem survivable and kinda native-ish looking to the species.

I've just written out a lengthy reply to the OP, with my thoughts on some of the comments made in this thread, but deleted it, there are some big differences between these old style forums and modern Social media and the modern stuff has slapped traditional forums hard, mainly through transforming the users into the product which we've never wanted to do.

But, rather than moan about that, I'm very interested in suggestions that we could implement that might re-invigorate the membership, grow it some and see Bushcraft UK thriving more.

I know that for some, posting images is an important thing and we can look into making it possible for all people to post images. The issue we have is that it will cost, everything to do with the forums costs and we're lucky that we have some very loyal members that help support the forums because we don't have any advertising income or others sources of income.

So, if we implement things that increase costs, such as opening up image posting, we also have to look at things that increase income and also keep extra benefits for subscribing members, so if there's things that would make the Full membership better I'm open to that as well.

Maybe I'll start a new thread to keep the info easy to find. Here you go!

The full membership fee is so very small. If you want the privileges just pay it.

£two coffees and a biscuit for a year.

If you take the decision not to pay for full membership I respect that. But don’t winge.

If you pay three figures for your knife.
If you pay more for your sharpening kit than I paid for my tent why do you baulk at membership????

This forum offers me a place to discuss some things that are important to me with like (and unlike) minds without subscribing to the frenetic world of electronic messaging systems (which I mostly refuse - I do have WhatsApp if that counts)
That alone is worth the fee.

I’m hesitant to suggest anything new as my approach to bushcraft is marginal and somewhat tangential but if I think of anything I’ll post it.

The internet has changed though folks, posting images is expected whether you think it’s reasonable or not, and people will vote with their feet. Why would they pay for image posting when they can go elsewhere for free? Simple as that unfortunately, whether right or wrong.

I wonder if there are any XenForo plugins which allow uploading of images from the BCUK interface, but they are hosted elsewhere like on Imgur or something? I can have an investigate, as that’d kill two birds with one stone. Easy image posting from the user interface here, without the additional hosting cost.

Not exactly. You may not pay cash for membership with other sites but you do pay through seeing adverts, having your photos used, having your data harvested etc.

I can see both sides of the argument but must say I like the fact the site doesn't show adverts or force me to do stuff.

This.

I would far rather pay a small membership fee and not have the advertising or to be a product. I have very little participation in other forms of social media for that reason.

There's also the old saw that mostly people don't properly value something that they get for free.

Totaly agree here. If its not broke, don't fix it. !
Those that want to post pics pay for the privilege by buying membership. Fine by me.
I hate all this something for nothing , "im entitled because so and so does it," attitude ,if your not happy to abide by the rules, then.........you know what to do.
