  • Merry Christmas Guest, we hope that you have a great day wherever you are, and we're looking forward to hearing of your adventures in the New Year!
Link to Lantmäteriet web-map for the Jokkmokk area, you can switch to english at the top right.

http://kso.lantmateriet.se/kartsok/...5563&placeName=&zoom=6&mapType=topowebbkartan

It seems there's incomplete coverage of the country in the currently available paper maps, eg. the 1:50k series doesn't include Jokkmokk.

Yes, Swedish map coverage isn't OS standard. The Northern and Eastern mountain regions are 1:100,000.

At least it means less maps are needed, not much kop for micro-navigation though. Thanks for that link :)

Good stuff Da, I'm still flat out making and modding kit. Finished the 'boggan 10 mins ago.

For those of you that are interested in our adventures, we shall be using a satellite transmitter to relay information such as location, and basic information such as status (please note this is the edited form, a few designated people (family) have access to the unedited data, for safety backup purposes)
The system is also designed to relay non-stop real-time locational information (+/- 10mtrs) to SAR services should the need arise, and forms only part of the safety net in place

The page itself gives a map overview of our 'real-time' position and any pre-designated messages that are sent. The location beacons only remain active for 7 days after which they are updated with newer locational data.

It is currently being tested before we leave for the next day or two then it will be taken offline and reset for the actual journey. (january 28th 2013- 18th February)

the Page can be found here

During the meetup in December Dave did a good job of selling the aluminised casualty blanket aka space blanket. I can see it being useful to me as a groundsheet in the bivi or as a rear reflective screen in a longfire shelter.

I've only found orange ones in the UK, at around £16, if I must have an olive one it'll cost me ~£17 posted from the states. Two questions, does anyone know of a source of olive ones in the UK, if I do order from the US, does anyone else want one ?

Andy
Kit monster do them - silver on one side olive green on the other. Set you back five and a half beer tokens.

Hooded version in olive, they also have the orange one for ~£12 presumably there's PnP on top.

Right! just finalising the last bits and pieces, and getting bag packed and weighed, just waiting on a couple of items to be delivered. then I'm ready to go...

I'm pretty well sorted as well.

I'll do the final weigh in when I roll the boggan up again. At the moment it's out flat in the conservatory.

Once I have that figure I'll know how much I can add in dry goods to save the food bill out there. (I reckon it's about 2kg.)

If I can find a nice fur hat and gloves, they are coming home with me :-)

The weather is definately changing. We should get a prolongued period of frost because of a high pressure area over Scandinavia and East/North Eastern winds. Prognoses is we will be skating in the Netherlands somewhere next week

Got most of my gear sorted. I have got an overbag for my PHD down bag so should be safe to go down to about -45C and relatively comfy at around -20C. I have found last time out that using the hood and collar correctly to prevent a draft is absolutely vital or else you will be cold at -5C in your -30C bag.

Need to finalise my food plan but am thinking of getting some local produce in Lulea. I have got some German Schmaltz to take along. Bring on the calories! ;)

I will be glad when I have arrived at the jokkmokk area with my pulka and gear. Let's get this party started!

Whew ! Still got some making/modding to finish. Got my M90 winter boots ordered at last.

Had a nice item arrive in the post today ! A big white official Jokkmokk envelope from the tourist office containing a couple of leaflets and pretty decent map of the town and surrounding area. Should be useful for getting around and sussing out whats where. There's some useful detail of the area to the south of town. I suspect its used quite a bit for recreation, there are skiing and snowmobile routes, and footpaths. There's a 'back-way' footpath across there from the campsite into the south side of town. Well worth sending off for as its free.

I can't pack anything yet as its going to get used in 2 weeks. Still having an M90 parka struggle, sourcing one big enough to go over a down jacket with mitt space is proving difficult. 10 shops on the case now with no joy as yet!

Pete, sure you really need a varmejacka as well as a down one? Nice-looking toboggan, I'm still not convinced I need one, as I'll be chalet based and planning to kip-out only for part of my stay can maybe travel a bit lighter. Lapland Outdoor hire-out ski pulkas, might use one of those for a few days if I can't find a cheap plastic thing.

Nicely done Pete

Still not started mine yet :( Might be taking the little pulk again if we get the snow

EDIT:

Are those whoopies tensioning the front end?
