During the meetup in December Dave did a good job of selling the aluminised casualty blanket aka space blanket. I can see it being useful to me as a groundsheet in the bivi or as a rear reflective screen in a longfire shelter.

I've only found orange ones in the UK, at around £16, if I must have an olive one it'll cost me ~£17 posted from the states. Two questions, does anyone know of a source of olive ones in the UK, if I do order from the US, does anyone else want one ?

Andy

If you stick with the orange, you have got the bonus of something for signalling or identification. I am taking a bright orange blizzard bag and one of those little silver emergency blankets as a potential building material.

Intersting things are afoot in the atmosphere;

The sun has been increasing in activity. It's peppered with sunspots and should provide some good light shows. More here http://spaceweather.com/

The weather patterns in the Northern hemisphere are looking like they will change quite soon, were in line for some much colder weather than present. The odds of us catching a cold spell are higher than usual-no certainty on it yet but something to keep in mind.
Fingers crossed for some proper cold weather here so I can get a little acclimatised.

A little heads up about Travelodges too, they are selling rooms at really low prices. Just booked a night in one before I fly from Heathrow for £19 :approve:.

Aye that had occurred to me, thanks for the tip. With a roll of black tape to mark it 'sos' or summat it might serve quite well in a emergency. Also having something in the camp which stands out a bit might be useful when returning in poor visibility.

Have you invested in a proper map then ? I made enquiries in Henry Roberts in Kendal and their distributors can supply the Lantmäteriet maps but I've not done owt about it yet.

just don't mark SOS on it unless you need it, or someone else might spot it and call in the rescue services!

not just in poor visibility - a quinzee or igloo on a snowfield or lake can become invisible from about 10m away. I carry a couple of Jerven rescue flags (dayglow orange with a reflective stripe) but a cheap hi-vis vest will do the same job.
I also carry some dayglo green strips of velcro with a reflective stripe down the middle. They were intended as armbands for walkers and cyclists, but I wrap them around tree trunks as waymarkers and to indicate turning-off points on trails.

The reflective bit is important as I presume you'll be short on daylight at this time of year, and not being able to find your shelter again after nipping out in the night to answer the call of nature could prove fatal

We've got just under 7 hours with the sun over the horizon and about an extra hour of twilight at each end.

The moon is full around 27th Jan waning to last quarter at the beginning of the market week, new on the tenth.

Over snow that should be enough to get around with unless we get heavy cloud in which case it will be seriously dark from about 17:00 to 06:00
