Hi Eric, are the runes the ones from an old Germanic alphabet or similar? I am looking to do something like this with our Cubs and it seems a good one to choose as it's different but with fairly simple characters.

Yes, it's based on germanic runes.

they look like german runes/oe runes to me, if you learn them, then it is possible to read all of the title of The Hobbit, which includes a mention of the original publishers!!

i managed it by a process of elimination, using the title in english and what you could pick up from thorin's map later. that might be an intersting exercise for some of the older ones.

What a great idea.
I've been having a play with both runes and Ogham but most initials are horrifically complicated.
The best so far has been this

... It even looks like my hammock set up in the woods.
I really must try to get hold of Coreldraw.

You need to get CorelDraw mate.

If you can't afford Corel or don't want to pay a bit of money for a package you might not use a lot There are a couple of opensource (free) alternatives out there

Here you go mate. There is no letter 'C' in the runic alphabet, it transposes it to 'K'. Here's your bindrune with the letters JM.
