An unpopular choice I suspect, but I rather like magpies. Absolute ********, obviously, and they don't exactly have a voice to inspire poets, but they're beautiful, clever and hide a shimmer of magnificent colour.

When I lived in Maine it was definitely the loon. They're like a duck that has returned to haunt you.

Favourite songbirds are robin, bullfinch and blackbird.

Favourite game birds are woodcock and English partridge.

Favourite birds of prey are goshawk, merlin and kestrel.

I don’t think I could choose an overall favourite!

I've always been a kestrel person. And always will be.

Mind you, there's something to be said for the humble robin. Especially on a winter's day, when other wildlife is scarce. You stop for a brew up and a few moments later there, perched on a nearby branch, you hear that familiar song and someone who's going to be your companion for a brief while...

Was just about to add Robin.Watched a big group (an unkindness or conspiracy apparently) of Ravens on Bank Holiday Monday on St Breock Downs. In excess of 30 I'd say all playing and circling above the Partridges that are reared there. While stood there a small Raptor chasing an unknown smaller bird shot between myself and my wife made eye contact with me for a split second and carried on the chase.Possibly a Merlin.
