I'm finally throwing in the towel in my battle to get my Ubuntu machine to see my Android 'phone..............it's not even possible now to remove the card and take the images off that way;
I've had enough!!!

Can one (or more) of you good people who are into Photography recommend me a camera, as cheap as possible, that'll just work as a "point and click" automatic, not too big, and not to be used for any creative purpose. I just need something that's good enough to record stuff I see that I may want to post here, sales and trade threads, that sort of thing........

Many thanks in advance :)

I used to use Pentax Optio cameras. They fit in a pocket, and take an acceptable picture. They can be picked up on the bay second hand for not much. The older models have fewer megapixels but still work fine.

Slow down, it looks like your problem is with ubuntu and not the phone. Have you tried other 'smart' phones in your machine? Sort out if you can your OS before you spend money on a camera that may also not be recognised.

Rik, it's a problem with Ubunto (canonical) having withdrawn support for anything Android; the forums are full of unresolved problems with this and believe me, I've tried everything. All other devices like my brother's
camera are seen just fine by the OS.

It's a wierd one and nobody seems to have found an answer to it yet; anyway it may be time to get a cheap camera and see if I'd like to come play with piccys :)

If you have a wireless network, have you tried the Airdroid app, once connected to the network, and the app started, you just type the address and code into your laptops web browser Then you can browse the folders and files on the phone, and download them to the computer. This is an OS agnostic application, all you need on the PC is a web browser.

Just won a Pentax Optio L 30 on the bay for £18.99 delivered, needs a battery which I've just scored for a fiver, so that should see me all right :) I've got a bad feeling that once I start with this I'm going to be bitten by the bug and find myself with yet another expensive pastime (!), but thanks to all the informative and fast responses to my OP I'm at least armed with a little knowledge and some recommendations which will get me a little further along the way.

@kard133; I couldn't get that set-up to work reliably for me, (probably my bad), but I think the camera is the way forward for me; thanks for the response :)

Thanks everybody who replied, I value the input greatly :)
