I've been learning my way around a dslr camera over the last few days. I take a lot of photos on my phone, but I'd like to gain a better understanding of how cameras work.
The plan is, start off with everything on automatic (point-and-click) and work my way through the manual settings until I get my head around how everything functions.

I'm currently using the shutter speed and focus on manual, the other stuff (F-Stops and ISO) are still on automatic until I figure out their role.

Thought I'd head out to the river today to see if I could find some birds to photograph whilst playing around with the shutter speed.

There is a little hide tucked amongst the reeds. After being in there for a few minutes a swallow came through the front door. They'd built their nest in the hide. We left them in peace.

Reached the woods and stopped in the shade for a brew and had a good view of a treecreeper. Didn't do very well with the shutter speed/focus on this one though.

Heading back, I was pretty pleased to come across this barn owl who (unusually) appeared to be enjoying the afternoon sun.

I was pleased enough to see the barn owl out during the day, but soon after a red fox came wandering past. Unfortunately, I wasn't quick enough to capture what could have been a really nice image.

By the time I got my act together, this is all I managed to capture of the pair. You can see the fox between the fence posts on the right, and the owl on the left. It may not be a great photo, but it was a nice scene to witness in the moment.
