I'M BACK!!!!!
Had a great time and learnt alot!! Leon: :You_Rock_
Weather was absolutely fanbloomintastic, accept for the 16 hour non stop rain on one day ... very depressing, and it wasn't even winter!!
Dartmoor is place that must be taken seriously!
Some things I learnt:
- Navigation, incl. passing (I do 56 paces in 100 mtr on level ground), disecting / triangulation, route set up, etc.
- Knots (including one for a makeshift abseil harness
)
- Axe work
, incl. feathersticks made with the help of an axe (They are better than my feathersticks made with a knife
).
- New and easier sharpening technique (I can sharpen my knife sharp enough to remove the hairs on my arm)
- Plants (Neil, I loved that long walk mate. My interest for plants is grown even more! ... I now know plant names of which I don't know in dutch ...
)
- Fire management ... there's a lot of wood needed for one day
- Had a trie on flint and steel
- Tried flint knapping - very interesting subject, and definately something I want to learn more about.
- Bow drill ... :aargh4: I still don't like that one, don't know - just not interested in it ... Is it just me and am I now frowned upon?
Or are there any others who have the same?
- and probably some other things I can't remember at the moment.
A few pics:
Neil and Leon looking for a lost contact lens.
Only found some pignuts
Oxalis - don't eat this one, it's deadly! Looks pretty though!
I notice it's on it's side (picture) - will sort that out tomorrow.
View
My basha positioned at a stone wall, that also house some mice
The small stream that provided us with water.
Me chopping billets with a GB hunters axe.
Me next to our fire. Tripod designed and made by Leon. Note the poles: made from wood ... and no chain to suspend the pots from but: (start the drums) linnen thread and a wooden pothanger.
Someone ran out of cigarette paper and decided to make a pipe ...
Fungi found on roots / at base of a pine tree.
Tony feel free to use the pics if you want to.
