Sounds like the Scottish hillfarms that the Forestry Commission took over. Lot of shattered communities in their wake.

Well, a friend of me in UK, a titled person with a large estate in Scotland, told me how they had to relocate the people because the soils were poor. in the 1800'.
I suspect they needed more space for sheep?
He has sheep and Highland cattle there now.
Sheep and goats destroy a lot. Dad told me that in the old days, a farmer only had one goat. So they could have one kid for Eastern.
That sheep and goats eat everything that grows, and crop the grass down to the level of the soil. Bad regrowing. Eat up young bushes, small trees.
If we learn to eat much less meat, we can easily convert the landscape to a low intensity farming like that lady farmer did.
Good for the land, good for us!
