What on earth is this animal part (II)

I don't think it's a hoof as the keratin section is usually quite thin.

What on earth is this animal part (II)

Hmmm, I can't think of anything with horns like that. The flat spot is usually quite distinctive of where teeth rub together in the manner described above.

    Advice on deer hunting

He will use his binoculars more than his scope, knife or even rifle and so I would get him a set of these: http://www.uttings.co.uk/p112113-bushnell-binocular-harness-19125cm/#.UxitBE2PO8Y Very seriously it ranks among the top three purchases I've ever made for deer stalking...

What on earth is this animal part?

The width is more exceptional than the length for warthog tusks and they are a bit too straight. Here is a world record warthog to help you decide: My bet would be that it would be from the hippo in the box... :D http://www.ivory-netsuke.com/images/hippo-tusk.JPG The straight teeth are...

What on earth is this animal part (II)

In consideration of the size especially they are most likely to be Hippo teeth, the ones circled in red in Mesquite's post in fact. Their job is to sharpen the corresponding bottom teeth to help the hippo cut the huge amounts of vegetation it must consume every day. I kept the teeth from my...

A sticky on common shotgun and firearms questions?

this is a trickier area than would be covered by the general sticky. Have a read of chapter of this : http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/publications/police/firearms/HO-Firearms-Guidance.pdf?view=Binary Chapter 12 specifically. If there is no statutory bar to a grant of licence then the best...

    Shotgun?

As 1.4S explosives one would have to amass quite a pile to exceed the storage limitations; but you are right in terms of Explosives law there is regulation on quanitity but in terms of firearms law there is no specific mandate as to the method storage of shotgun ammunition.

    the 69 million dollar question

    +1 Don't even mention the Custard C****s....

A sticky on common shotgun and firearms questions?

I think we can do a little better than that for our members. Pointers to information with a little extra human touch. :)

    Shotgun?

"reasonable steps to ensure their security" Otherwise, no legislation covers their storage. I keep mine in the bottom of my cupboard. Now if you have to report a theft of 5000 shells and it turns out they were in your garden shed... ;) BR is correct.

    Rim Fire Rifle Question....:)

Voice of experience here... :D If you up your budget by another £50-£75 you can pick up a stainless/synthetic 452 like the one above SH if you keep your eyes open. Frequently a good gunshop will have half a dozen .22 sitting there for you to handle. Not sure where you are but it can be worth...

    Shotgun?

That is consistent with my post mate, hand delivery is to ensure that security arrangements are in place. :) As you quite rightly point out however, if there is any doubt over the issue of a SGC or FAC, guidance should be sought from the FEO who will usually be very frank on the issue.

A sticky on common shotgun and firearms questions?

I don't want to cause any friction chaps. I was merely thinking that perhaps of all the subjects pertaining to bushcraft generally and wild food more specifically, firearms need the most careful guidance given. Perhaps I should just put a post on this thread with the information and what will...

    Breasting a pigeon

Here's a video from a good friend and shooting buddy, Mark Gilchrist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6XsH1fHkMU Watch from 1.50 onwards. Obviously you don't need to pluck the whole bird to get the thighs and breasts off.

    Breasting a pigeon

If you have a knife just pluck the centre of the breast, make a cut as close as possible on either side of the breast bone all the way down and peel the breasts off from the middle and top toward the bottom where they thin out near the abdomen. There is very little meat on the rest of a pigeon...

    Shotgun?

It is a chicken and egg scenario. The police are supposed to satisfy themselves that the conditions for secure storage are reasonably likely to be met, secure storage is the responsibility of the certificate holder, as it clearly says in the conditions on the first page. If the police are of...

    Rim Fire Rifle Question....:)

That's cheating! :D You could have two Anschutz target rifles for the price os that lovely, lovely rifle. :D Thumbhole stock, palmshelf, high cheekpiece, low buttpad, custom barrel, custom trigger, pic rail, new spring, new recoil buffer, new bolt, even a compensator... Seriously well specced...

    Rim Fire Rifle Question....:)

I think that the best zero for .22 RF is around 50 yards, especially if it's for use at night. You can get an idea of your drops from that table with the 50 yard zero. Your limiting factor with a .22, with any long range shooting really, is not how much a bullet drops. You can invest in a...

    Rim Fire Rifle Question....:)

With a subsonic you should hear the click of the firing pin and then a much louder crack as the round hits the bunny. It is this crack they hear and with practice you can work the bolt fast enough to merge the two sounds together. A semi-auto is louder at the rifle end as the actions slams back...

Newbie Question, what exactly is a "Bushcraft" knife?

Great hunting, and probably everything else, knife the H1. I had a H1 with the ordinary VG10 steel that I miss sorely... It had a convex sabre grind with a tiny conventional microbevel at the edge. I took it down to full convex with the sandpaper method. Took bleddy ages but was sharp enough...
