    Jokkmokk trip report - Andy

11th Feb. 2013 Herewith my report on the 'Sub Zero' 2013 Jokkmokk trip. I hope it will be of interest or use to the reader. It's rather lengthy, so I've subdivided it into sections, so you can skip my waffle and go straight to the pics ;-) I've avoided a detailed narrative of events, as I could...

Norwegian Army 'Instruction in Winter Service - Bivouac'

Back in December Bob posted some links to some of the Norwegian Army Winter instruction docs, which are very good. However there was no link to the 'bivouac' manual. I had a quick search and found it here.

    Lightweight stainless pots

If anyone is in the market for a lightweight stainless pot for snow melting duties, they might want to have a look at the cheap stock pots on Ebay, eg. 320839083108. A fraction of the price of Primus gourmet pots etc.

Lightweight 2-4 man floorless tipi for use in snow

Anyone got such a thing they could bear to move-on ? Eg. Mountain Hardware Kiva, Kifaru, Helsport tipis etc. ? Ideally design needs to be vented, have sod cloths all round and be no less then 7 foot at the apex. Stove port not important. If no luck with this I may make one.

    Helsport Fjellduk vs Jerven Thermo

Apologies if this has been covered before. Has anyone compared these ? There's a big difference in the price, is the Jerven really worth the extra. Bit of a moot point really as the Helsport is in stock locally at a price I can afford, and the Jerven isn't. Be interesting to hear of any...

    Desert boots for subarctic ?

Seems to me the properties of a boot for use in subarctic conditions are chiefly to act as a container for the insulative layers as may be needed for the conditions, whist maximising lightness and water vapour transmission, but providing sufficient robustness for whatever activities are planned...

Aussie Army Field Ration Eating Device aka FRED

I give you.. the infamous Aussie 'FRED' (Google it if you're not familiar) ! Their version of the P38, with added spoon. Makes a super-lightweight can/bottle opener and spoon combo. NATO stock number 7330-66-010-0933. Hard to find genuine ones I understand.. I imported a bag of these from...

Bargain Cooker No. 12 on fleabay

Not mine etc. but I just came across this poorly listed Cooker No. 12 with a buy-it-now price half the going rate. I'd have it myself at that price if I hadn't already got one. Actually I'm getting shot of mine as I can't stand the noise they make. If anyone here does go for this consider...

Help me ID this military (?) jersey

Been looking for a wool jersey for a while for use in the woods, then this came along. It had a bit of a story attached to it, allegedly the guy I got it from had it off a Falklands vet who'd been in 3 Para. Not sure the jersey is that old though. No labels and it looks nothing like any of the...

    Greetings from North Lancs.

About time I said hello to all ! I was at the Bushmoot and had popped up on the forum just before but not done a proper intro. I'm a 48-year old male, from rural north Lancashire. I was lucky enough to grow up playing in the woods and have enjoyed outdoor activities all my life. An...

Compo ration apple flakes and condensed milk

Anyone else remember this combo ? The condensed milk came in a tube, the apple flakes were heated in aluminium mess tin over a hexi cooker. I'm going to bring some to the moot..
