I saw over a dozen pheasants all together standing around on the edge of a field/road verge yesterday. Is this the time of year when gamekeepers release bred birds for the shooting season maybe?

yes the season for pheasant starts on Oct 1st. but the 12th aug , called The Glorious 12th starts the hunting season for other stuff. DD xxx

These were all standing round looking dumb-struck, not surprising if all they have been used to are closed cages/runs.
No fun in shooting them, they'll fly straight, slow and low. That's not sport, or a challenge. The very point Chris and I were discussing at the Summer Moot.

Time to get nuts :D

It’s neither, it’s often a business meeting or a way to sway influence, much like a round of golf on a posh course. Everyone, many of them non-shooters, get to casually bang away and bag a bird or two.

I’m surrounded by 3 huge estates and it’s big business. The truly unfortunate, and unforgivable fact is, many of the birds are binned, burnt, or shovelled into a mass grave as nobody wants them. The beaters will take a few but many will have been shot badly and don’t present very well with broken wings. Hardly anyone knows how to pluck and prep a bird for eating, and many ‘down from Londons’ wouldn’t be sitting in their sheds with handfuls of feathers and an Opinel to get the guts out. Waitrose is fine thanks.

On the chestnut front, this year there are a lot of very small ones, but I’m finding lots of a good size. None as big as last years golf balls but not far off.

They are very young, weak and sickly and pumped full of anti biotics. If they survive the shoot and get a couple of years in the wild they are an altogether different proposition. They used to give me a good run for my money when I used to hunt them with my hawks, DD xxx

Wild strawberry leaves for me today, for tisanes in winter. We have a new flush of growth after a single day of drizzle on Thursday, which was very, very welcome, but still far too little. (Also gathered raspberries, sage, rosemary, tulsi, basil, cucumber, tomatoes, squash, blettes, mint, chillies, and calendula, but those were grown by me, not foraged!)

That was a very good haul :)

I've been drying raspberry leaves for tea too. Did some meadowsweet recently as well. Usually I take the flourish but the leaves go well with rosenoble (figwort) in Winter.

Oh, your making me look lightweight. Dads already baffled at my jarrage.

(But how could I resist a dozen eggs at £2.25? I have lots of pickled eggs now)

Son1 and girlfriend now have ducks....I said at the time, "What are you going to do with over a thousand duck eggs a year ?"
We're finding out :rolleyes2:

The ducks are very cute, but the volume of eggs is growing......

I like them pickled but Duck eggs keep surprisingly well on their own, but don't let hidden clutches hatch! Absolute chaos, far too cute to kill and the neighbours love them too much.

There's a business in it. Son1 and GF aren't going down that route, but if you set up properly then you can sell the eggs, and duck eggs sell at a premium....and Falstaff is right, not much cuter than ducklings :)
