This was found yesterday, still alive and whatever did it was caught in the act.

I'd say probably crow too.....

It was Crow.

The ewe ended up on her back and couldn't get back up, the crows came in and drilled into her eyes (they took both) with their beaks.
She had to be put to sleep.

Serious pests when you're a sheep farmer though.

Glad you got the offender. Clever creaturs but the sound of "chack" or "caww" has me reaching for a box of no.6 shot.

I remember the Scottish hill farmers paying a bounty for dead hooded crows. They would mob sheep till they stumbled off a crag or steep drop, and then feast on them. I couldn't tell from the picture. First time I've seen that as a 'warm case' thanks for sharing :thumbup:

thanks for that, really interesting. i'd heard of crows killing lambs before but never pecking the eyes from a live ewe.

I can always remember my gran telling me to mind the crows because they'd peck your eyes out. I was terrified of them as a kid!

i live in a sheep farming area, and i've heard the same thing since being a kid, that "crows will peck your eyes out", i've just never heard of it actually happening before now. i've seen crows/magpies attacking new born lambs, in fact i've shot my fair share of corvids for that very reason, i just never imagined that they'd go for a live animal of that size. truely remarkable birds

Christ! I'm going to sound like a psycho now, but, on two occassions I've put out fresh deer corpses (too mangled from vehicle collisions) and watched them to see what happens.
The corvids would always go for the eyes and tongue.

Haha! I never had a tv at the time. It was either fire or corpses to look at. Sometimes combining the two.

Poor old Mrs.Sheep. I've heard of this happening to new born lambs, but never an adult. I can't say I'd have pretensions to the crows though - they're a part of this ecosystem and just doing what's natural to them in what is a particularly unnatural scenario to them - i.e. encountering a herd of livestock. Same thing when foxes eat chickens. Roast lamb anyone?
