What did you buy today?

  • BushMoot: Come along to the amazing Summer Moot 31st July - 5th August (extended Moot : 27th July - 8th August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I bought it from Camping International

Is anyone aware of the advantage of the Expedition 12XL (1850 x 575 x 12mm) vs the Comfort 12XXL (1900 x 570 x 12mm)

The latter is very slightly longer, half the price, and lighter presumably because it doesn't have the brass eyelets. Am I missing something? Both five season, both made in Wales etc.

I'm not surprised that you can't decide which is better... the descriptions of the two products on that website are like chalk and cheese. One gives plenty of information, the other very little... just looking at the weight, one is described as "450g" and the other "less than 11 ounces" . One has a TOG rating, the other doesn't.

Yellow: 185 x 57.5 cm x 1.2 cm = 10638.7cm³ for 450g is, I think 42.29g per m³
Red: 190 x 57 cm x 1.2 cm = 12996cm³ for 311g is, I think 29.93g per m³

So the yellow one is 41% more dense than the red one.

Four tyres for the Landy, having realised I accidentally ordered the wrong ones yesterday and cancelled that order.

Going to try for a Halfords Trade membership today so that I can pick up a set of their advanced tools without it being so painful.

Thank you as always for your insight on this sort of thing! Though for the density calculation, the brass eyelets of the Expedition will be throwing off that weight comparison. I think they're the same material otherwise, based on details on others sites e.g. here:

I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject, just repeating what Mike Parsons himself said. Evazote has vinyl added to the polymer chain to increase rebound rate and increased longevity/durability.

I said 35kg/m3 i my original post but can't remember where I got that figure from. Mike Parsons said the Karrimat was 45kg/m3 so your calculations are probably more accurate

There is also the Expedition Summit 12XL which is Plastazote bonded to a thin layer of Evazote which is lighter than the Expedition Extreme 12XL and a little cheaper.

They also made the Summit 12XL for the military and these are cheaper again (they are green instead of yellow) they're £29 posted here:

I've never bought from this site but it appears to be a legit outdoors shop in Blackburn.

Do you know if, like the standard Farmer, the main blade is thicker than normal? I have the Alox Farmer, which I got specifically because of the sturdier blade, and was tempted by the X but haven’t been able to ascertain whether the blade is thinner to accommodate the scissors?

Got the Finnish Loue from Bushcraft Spain arriving next week....Forrest green oilskin! woop woop

I know that the Farmer X is chunkier than the Farmer due to the scissors so I doubt they made the blade thinner

Was in Perth so got a whole load of stuff including some incense, dog biscuits and a piece of linen.

This was before Games Workshop opened.

I need to be kept away from the 21st century.

My Farmer X arrived and I checked the blade thickness and they're both 3mm at the base

I imported, I couldn’t find anywhere Europe/ uk based that stocked them, when I considered what a Best Duty cost it was a fair bit less well below paying duty on it.
It’s going to be a steep learning curve as I’m used to cast iron but I’m looking forward to it
Nice, Did you import it? or find one in the UK? Also a big fan of Malcom Douglas!
