I've had all that in the past. I used what I had to hand - mink trap, plain chocolate digestive with a dash of worcester sauce. Had him the next day and finished off with the Weihrauch.
Don't have a .22 just now just a 12g and a crossbow, so a bitt OTT. It or they are eating the food so with luck they should be gone soon.
Upon inspection its was clear the rat had been gnawing at the gap under the back door. The door is on the cards to be replaced but in the meantime I've screwed a sheet of aluminium across the bottom of the door. The gap under the door is from people walking on the same step for over two hundred years

Good shout Rik, prevention's better than a cure. Not a fan of poison in case it gets higher in the food chain.
the other thing to be careful of is lymes disease. the combination of rats and rivers increase the danger.
you could try those new style rat traps that have have a metal plate on the bit the rat walks into when going for ya bait. once all contacts are made the rat is fried. sort of green mile for rats.

Make sure you present your poison right so only the target species is affected. What I would also do is change the poison you are using regularly so the rats do not build up immunity to them. Put molasses on the bate too as rats have a sweet tooth.
The other thing I would look at is running a trap line using Fenn traps. Put in the right place and check twice a day, these beauties will sort them out. Again this also must bee done in the correct and legal way. Either ask a game keeper/pest controller to show you the way it is done or have a look on the BASC web site.
As you already have a shot gun ticket I would get a .410 like others have said….BUT you have to love the O Natural option of a terrier!!! especially if it’s a Border Terrier !!!
