"Tbh it's what you make of it, no one scorns anyone for their kit, or lack of expensive stuff. Interesting to see what other folks use though :), and, iirc, Rik-uk3 is about the only fellow who'll agree with you about the jeans. Get them wet or damp and that's how they'll stay"

Yep, fine in the summer, nothing wrong with them. Don't know about the rest of you but waterproof trousers go in my pack when camping.

I wear jeans; walking around near home, gardening, scuffing around comfortable. I don't take them hillwalking or camping though. On the other hand, I usually camp on a Scottish Hillside, and it's never dry there anyway

cheers,

I'm middle class. Theres nothing with the notion of class, it gives an order to life. Where would be if everyone was the same, who would we take the p' out of for talking funny?

Jeans, nothing wrong with them either. Cowboys wear them, and they ride horses, get wet and have gun fights! How cool is that? Imagine kicking open the door to the saloon to face the hired gun-slinger that has just rode into town in a pair of Craghoppers and a ventile jacket with a waterproof hat instead of pair of Levis, a 10 gallon hat and a chewed up Mexican blanket?

You don't have to be posh to be classy.................................
And you definitely not classy just because you're posh! Shish Kebabs! I know some posh ppl who are definitely NOT classy by any stretch of the imagination.

Cowboys wear jeans?! Now they do courtesy of the Marleboro man and others but the original Wild West gunslinger cowboy never did. That is a fllacy created as a marketing took by jeans companies and that cigarette company. Jeans (especially the blue ones) were cheap trousers and marked you out as being cheap. The only people who wore them were miners and their kind. I got that from a pukka history documentary too. My Granddad was a Yank and even he remembers jeans as not being worn as much where he was. Cowboys had money to buy proper trousers not have to make do with cheap cloth. IIRC the dye used in blue jeans back then were the cheapest ones too so if you had jeans on and they were blue you were considered by cow pokes and being the lowest of the low. Mining was basically done by those who couldn't do anything else!!!

Sorry to dispel your romantic views of cowboys but they were as class ridden as we are in that they looked down on others as others looked up at them.

Class and Cash are not important in bushcraft, its what we do and how we do it that matters...

I have the full Ray Mears hammock kit, cost em a fortune, but at the time i could afford it...

this year when i needed a collapsable fire to go lightweight camping on the motorbike with the wife, I couldy beleive how much they cost so i made one... four oven trays from the pound shop and a couple of hours in the back yard. Worked a treat and I was so proud that i had madwe it and that it wourked, thats worth so much more to me that if id spent over £100 on one..

But whatever the cost of your kit, if we all go out and we all enjoy going out, then does it really matter what we sleep in/under??? For the majority on this forum i guess not, its about shared experience and shared knowledge.Thats why i come here, I read the kit reveiws and look at the group buys, i might join some of them, but if i dont and others do, whats that to me???

Lets all breath deep and relax and enjoy being in the outdoors, there is no better place to be.

BTW I get stick for being a gear freak but on here I am accepted as "one of us" despite not everyone is like me. This site accepts all sorts including gwumpy buggers. As far as gear I buy the best I can that fits my needs. By best I combine fit, fit for purpose, performance, quality, sometimes durability and value (or bang for your bucks as I like to think of it as). All those criteria mean that whilst I don't get the best because I can't afford it I often get real crackers of gear that work well but are cheaper than you'd think. Take Titanium stuff. I don't get overpriced but considered the best MSR stuff. I get alpkit myticup and the the Vargo Ti-lite from a cheap shop near me for a fraction of the cost.

I buy cheaper primus gas stoves instead of over prices jetboil stuff and it works just as well (the last test I saw it used something like 1g more gas to bring the same amount of water to the boil as in the jetboil stove. Think I can carry that don't you especially since the pot and windhield included is a lot less than the jetboil of the same pot capacity.

See what I did there? Turn an argument for this site being for allsorts into a gear review??;) :D

It's a shame he never hung around last night.

The hangover must be hurting though after falling off his perch - see, never drink and fish.

When going through this forum i keep noticing the irony of it all.

Lot's of people view Bushcraft as a way to get closer to nature, learn skills used by our ancestor and embrace the wee man inside that want's to smash stuff with axes and other sharp stuff and burn stuff.

The idea of getting closer to nature but doing it with things like titanium mugs, goretex jackets, clothing that has more research, thought, expertise into it than apollo 11.

We like to think we appreciate nature more and help protect it by not taking greenwood, which on here seems to be worse than murder..

Going out into the woods to feel more connected to the land by hauling in 200 pound worth of gear.

Anyone new to bushcraft might think he needs all that crap but you don't.

A pair of jeans, a t shirt, a couple of jumpers and a jacket plus couple of pairs of socks and boots is all you'll need in winter, you dont need titanium, just get a ss tin, you don't need a 30 pound tarp or a 200 pound sleeping bag or even a 50 pound knife.

We a

And you managed to categorise the whole forum membership in 2 months well done indeed….

Yet another opinionated troll….

I bet jeans, a t shirt, a couple of jumpers and a jacket plus couple of pairs of socks and boots will keep you warm under that bridge

Rich - yeah I got bad. My current long standing problem is the Evernew burner, trivet and DX shield. I know I don't need them, I know I don't really want them but I want them. Ever since BPL-UK first started selling them I wanted a set. I don't even like meths burners neither and wood burners are not as useful up in the Lakeland Fells where there is not as much good fuel (certainly not any dry ones with the level of rain we get).

I hope the guy comes back. I want to ask him which jeans he thinks are best for the outdoors? Levis, wranglers, diesel with all those fancy pocketty bits all over them? We need to know these things!

PS you know you have a gear freak problem, when your spell-checker you have on BCUK recognises all the main brands of outdoor gear and no longer flags them as spelling mistakes!!

I think most of of us order that new bit of nice shiny kit because it takes us back to our childhood when we get all excited when the postman delivers a parcel, only to open it and realise that youve just bought another expensive waste of money thats just more to carry and you didnt really need! Ive just spent £60 on a trangia 27 when the old Swedish army surplus one that Ive had for years is still going strong, but it looked so pretty and I convinced myself that I REALLY did need it and as I can be very persuasive I talked myself into it!
