Stevie 777 in post 19 you say you know people wont put shellfish in there mouths not because they dont like the taste but because they dont like the texture, well although i dont know you i fall into the not putting them in my mouth catergory. Though its because i dont like the taste texture and in the case of crab smell. Ive tried limpets, retched. Tried prawn, not for me. Have to admit wont go near crab. Lobsters ok will eat that, if there was anything else. Ive come to the conclusion im definately not a shore type gatherer even though i live right on the coast, which is a pity, do like fish though tried lots of types liked them all. There are some truely humongous limpets around here so i do feel im missing out slightly.

Quick strike with the edge of a flat stone, the adjacent limpets won't clamp down, I have never found them that sensitive.

Cooking, just pour a kettle of boiling water over them in a pot, leave for 1 minute and pour off the water, the limpets will have left the shell (or will require only the slightest push with your finger tip to release).

The black bit is the tastiest bit, the foot is not so chewy if they are removed from the hot water quickly, the only bits I remove are the 'horns', been eating limpets since I was 5 years old, love them.

A couple of weeks in the wild with nothing and i guarantee you'll be sucking the insides out a dead Badger. go for the Limpets man. get those rubber beasties over yer neck. what you gotta lose other than your breakfast.

Limpets taste foul, have a grim texture and give little nutrition ... not for me thanks!
I do not like much seafood at all, so it could be a personal prejudice :)

You need to know the "Special Whistle" goes something like this..Phwee whoo whit twit Whoo Hoo Phweee. that should get their attention.
Ahh, so that's it. I'd been imitating the call of an oyster catcher, now I think on it they're not going to answer that. I'll restart the training and breeding program in the new year. Cheers.

Stevie ive tried them like i said i retched. As for being starving in a survival situation id rather eat the dead badger you mention anything really rather than shell fish. I am bit upset i dont like it as i could eat virtually for free at certain times of the year. Ive been snorkeling round here and the rocks off the coast have got lobster, edible crab galore in late summer. Huge limpets year round but its just not for me.As for removing which i have done often as friends who come costal camping with me like them i prefer good bit of drift wood and a quick strike works best for me.

You can even lift them off with your fingers if you surprise them, after all seagulls can easily manage to get them. I've actually found limpets better raw than cooked, picked from a clean beach of course.

It's funny on a US bushcraft site I was looking at recently they were talking of wrasselin' bears and killing moose with a sharpened stick. Here in the UK we're sneeking up on limpets. (I love it, and would much prefer to surprise a limpet rather than a bear.)

I would love to see Wolves reintroduced into Scotland, Bears not so much. I prefer to wild camp without the need to keep looking over my shoulder whilst shouting, Hey Bear, Hey Bear, on a long trek...Hey Limpet, I'm fine with that.

I remember when Hercules the Bear escaped in 1980, a lot of folk feared he'd swim to the mainland and go on the rampage. Numbers of folk heading to the hills supposedly dropped at that time. I don't fancy them making a comeback in the UK either.
