Hey all,
Bushcraft isn't just about being in the woods, it's also about how we live our lives. I'm pretty much a Luddite around the house and not having a telly and such helps me out somewhat. I did the "carbon footprint calculator" here http://actonco2.direct.gov.uk/index.html and came out with a pretty good result 1.16 tonnes compared to the average user at 9.96 tonnes, the target is .93 tonnes. This must be pretty bloody sparse by the way. It said I needed a microwave (hate 'em) and underfloor heating.... (what heating.... I'm with the Aberdonians on that front). What do you come out as. If any of you smart folks can tell me how to come up with the survey graph things that we see at the start of some threads I'd love to know how to try here.
Cheers

I can't get past the first section, some problem uploading data it says, but the first section gave a figure of 0.92 tonnes.

cheers,

1.9 of which 1.43 is home, 0.47 is appliances and a big fat 0 for transport

It should be lower but theres no choice if you've no rads or if you haven't cavaity wall insulation as the house was built in the 1800s and the walls are nearly a foot thick

I tried the one the Dick Strawbridge uses and came out at 1.25 planets

Cheers for doing this,
I have a wee theory that the average here will be a lot lower than the UK average due to the type of folk we are on the forum. Seems that way so far but would be interesting to see more data from more users.

I got 6.71 tons for my household (just the two of us though). Seems a bit more thorough than the Dick Strawbrige one - i think i got about 3.4 planets on that test but it doesnt give you much credit for commuting by train or partially heating your house with wood instead of burning fossil fuels

Still its interesting to find out. :)

Hi Xylaria,
Aye the dishwasher thing confused me too, the only thing I can think of is that a largish dishwasher would do more dished per litre of heated water as it'll do numerious days dishes all at once if loaded to capacity, where-as non students:lmao: tend to do dishes as they use them and will therefore heat water daily so using more dishes. Though I'm not convinced myself yet, may have to go look for some data on this.

0.4 for home
1.56 appliances
14.56 for travel (!!!)

Mind you, I travel a heck of a lot for work so I'm not surprised. (Plus I heard that you have a larger footprint because of public transport)

The most water effienct dishwasher uses 8 litres of water. I save up my washing up until the end of the day and at most use two bowls of water, of about 6-10 litres each. In dry weather that water is recycled to water plants. I am still not confinced dishwashers will save the world but I wouldn't guilty for using one now. I will never get one myself as I dislike modern gadets.

I agree, I reckon I'm pretty good at washingdishes as I was dragged up right by pretty Calvanistic east coast parents to wash them in a certain order so making less waste. Kinda like my "bin" usage. I have a standard green wheelie bin. I'll be lucky if it would be "filled" in about two months, due to composting, recycling, lifestyle and the like.... but do I get a rebate on my council tax... along with the other savings I make? NOPE.

Even the carbon footprint I posted involves the unfortunate fact that the comany I work for "moved" me last year, previously I'd given up my car as I'd moved to be beside my work and so didn't need a car... now I do as public transport doesn't cover my journeys. :puppy_dog
So now have about 9000 miles that weren't mine before.
