Isn't it a bit overkill to use three slots for cutting implements?

No

It depends on what you are going to do on the island, The OP didnt specify, but if its a long term stay I would be building a substantial structure and using the tarp as the waterproofing for the roof and coconut husk for chinking.

Read 'One mans wilderness' and see if you think 3 cutting tools is overkill ;)

with the three cutting tools (knife, saw, axe) you can make almost anything you need to survive.

tiller a bow, make a shelter, make a fire (cut a firebow) cut firewood, really the list is endless.

if i had to, i could do without the rest of the items on the list if i only had those three items.

What with working offshore, I'd keep the liferaft and contents:

1. Liferaft and thermal protection (instant shelter).
2. Survival food and water.
3. Knives (albeit safety ones).
4. First Aid kit.
5. Collection Equipment (sea anchors, bailer, sponges plastic bags)
6. Attention Seeking Equipment (torch, flares, heligraph)
7. Fishing Kit.
8. Survival Suit (waterproof and warm)

Luxury item would be the wife!

Plus the Collins Gem Lofty Wiseman Survival Pocket Book.

hmmm good one

1 - My HI blem Kukuri - with karda for some cutting duties and chakma for sharpening/fire steel usage (integral to the sheath so i'm counting it as one item :)
2 Firesteel
3 Paracord
4 my 1.2 L steel mug a billy might be better but this one has been around the world already
5 2 X 2 Orange Tarp
6 fishing kit
7 - potassium permangenate (i think mine has turned into something nasty over the years)
8 - EPIRB (don't have one )or failing that my trusty old dive strobe been used loads and i've yet to replace the battery or indeed lose it!

Luxury item would have to be the dog eared copy of Mayfair which no doubt is lurking under some bushes on the island somewhere :)

I spent a week on a tiny island east of Ovalau in March - our biggest concern was the 80% proff Bounty rum running out.

Cheers

Well, for the sake of one item (i.e. a mirror) I still reckon it's a heck of a lot easier to try & signal to get off the island rather than actually set out with the plan of sailing off! ;)

Anyway, that in mind, my list would be:

1. Frost knife
2. Laplander folding saw
3. Signal mirror
4. Fire-steel
5. Billy can
6. Water bottle
7. Paracord
8. Tarp

Book: 'Papillon' by Henri Charrière
(BRILLIANT book: now there's a guy who NEVER gave up his fight for freedom!)

Luxury: A laminated photo of my fiancée

(Would consider trading the tarp for a portable de-salinator, but I don't own one!)

Signal Mirror anyone?

Yeah got 3 on the Merc :D
aswell as several miles of wire cordage, I can burn a tyre as a signal fire, and fry segull eggs on the bootlid :) Thats until i get bored and build a boat to get off the island.

Cheers
