Hello Ben, and welcome to the Cambridgeshire thread :)

Here is a link to the directions page of the sites website. There are plenty of trees about so i'm certain you'd be able to find a couple of suitable ones for a hammock :) I'm sure that, in due course, Wolfcrafter will be along with the 'sign up' list and perhaps a reminder of rules etc for any newbies? - so keep a look out in the near future :)

We are a small but friendly bunch, and more than happy to see new faces :)

Thanks mate, i hope to be able to make the next meet.

Hi guys, my name is Steve and I live in March, Cambs.
I have been looking into bushcraf for a while now and it looks great fun!!!
Im a complete newbie and tbh I dont have any kit at all yet (Im hoping driving trains on my rest days will help with this little problem) My missus is paying for me to go on a 4 day bushcrat course with a company called Wildwood Bushcraft down in Sussex, Im hoping that this will give a good foundation to build up some skills, all I have now is a keen interest and a will to learn.
I have a couple of questions though, 1. is it ok for newbies to come to a meet and are you guys willing to pass on some of your skills?(sounds silly I no) and 2. and please forgive my daft questions but what exactly do you guys do on an overnight meet?
Like I say I have no skills to speak of yet but from what I hav seen on you tube and read on here it looks awesome!
Thanks for reading my post, hope to see you all soon.

Yo Steve. I'm in March as well.
Norwich group meet you would be welcome to come with me if you want (discuss it nearer the time), Cambridge meet you would need to fill in a form (CRB) as it is in a scout field near Cambridge Here's the link PM me if you want to talk about anything (address details, etc)

As for the Norwich meet sounds good mate, although I really need to get myself some get, do you no of any good threads on here which covers a buget sort of bushcraft kit? you will have to forgive me, Im not lazy, just find navigating forums a nightmare lol.

cheers
Steve

Hello Jacko,

If you send Wolfcrafter a PM, I'm sure he will be able to provide you with all the details needed to attend a Cambridgeshire meet :) as far as inexpensive kit goes, have a read through this thread.

Seems like there might be one or two 'new' faces at the next meet, which will be nice for everyone :)

Soz for the massive delay guys. (House move is chewing up all my time, I've now got to find a cheap Arboriculturist to survey the house due to eucalyptus tree roots near the foundations!)

Welcome Peter, Steve and Ben to the Cambridge group.

Ben.. The site has plenty of hammock spaced trees for you to hang out in. (not sure yet if im hammocking again or using a new tent) Location can be found on my previous post. #626

Steve.. newbies are more than welcome, and although it is not a bushcraft course, there are many skill sets kicking around between us all! We don't know everything Ray Mears does, but when we cross minds, we can create quiet a large base of knowledge between us. That's one of the nice things with these bushcraft meets, the conversations and swapping of ideas. Even if you are new to Bushcraft, don't be afraid to speak up, as people from different backgrounds often bring different approaches and different ways of thinking and problem solving. Plus its not just all Bushcraft talk, we drift into anything really! So long as we all have a relaxing chilled out weekend, stay comfortable, cook some lovely grub and get to know each other, everything else should follow in time. (Although I will say, full socialising is not a requirement, if you want to just say hi, then do your own thing, that's also fine! There's plenty of space and corners just to relax, watch the stream flow by, and swing in you hammock looking up at the sky!) There will be a communal area for the social side and if it rains.

Kev/Lee.. Cheers for keeping the thread alive with reply's while I've been quite. Can I just mention that the form is not for a CRB check, it is mainly so I know who's on site, and if the site owners ask for details, I have them to hand. For example, next of kin details just in case we need to contact them etc. You about that weekend Kev?

Checkout my blog Steve for some budget tents and Teepee's ive compiled. Wolfcrafter.Blogspot/Bushcraft Kit

If your staying overnight, a tent/hammock or tarp is required. (a lot of bushcraft tarps and hammocks are brought from the UK manufacturer DD Hammcoks.)

Then all you need is some food to cook! (on the open communal fire or on your own equipment, be it gas, liquid fuels or wood burners!)

Thats it really to start with! You will find different opinions from different people on kit, so its always best to see some in action and figure out whats best for you and your setup!

Its my birthday on 28th this month and Im gonna ask my lovely missus to buy me some bushcrafty(if thats a word) stuff, Iv got clothing thats perfectly good enough, and I have already picked out a cheap starter knife, Jack pyke stockman, what oter things would be useful to bring along to the meet in august? As Im already akeen camper I have a small stove (coleman f1) and head lamp and pans and stuff, any help would be great cheers.
thanks

I wouldn't let your tent put you off coming along, as long as it does the job of keeping the weather of you, thats all that matters. Shouldn't of thought that anyone would be offended by the St George cross on it either, after all it is a scout site :)

In addition to the kit you have mentioned, it might be worth bringing a chair or similar to sit on (well it is nice to have some comfort at times :))

Also, not sure if there are any other Noobs luring about and reading this but I have found this bargin on ebay -

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200618059218&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

These saws get fantastic reviews off of everyone and for £14 free postage it seems to be a bargain!!

That is a good find on that saw, although as always, it pays to shop around amazon have some for a pound less!

That said though, I'm more than happy with my Wilkinson Sword folding saw that was less expensive than either of those from a local garden centre. Although, when the time comes to replace it, I think I will be looking at a laplander.

hmmmm do I win the prize for spotting the deliberate mistake?? :)

Sounds like your already sorted Steve for kit. I just purchased a cheap 2 man tent for the boys that I may use myself. £25 from Argos. It is only a single skin Poly, but comes with two doors and windows, a top hooded air vent, with a centre pole. Took me 10 mins to put up. It comes in lovely bushcraft colours too!

The Bahco Laplander is in my opinion one of the best folding saws around, you'll see a lot of bushcrafters using them! There are cheaper ones which also are very good, but considering the price drop of the Laplander, its a fantastic buy! I paid about £23 for mine 2 years ago and that was cheap then. For the extra few pounds Laplanders now are over others, the quality is well worth it! Around camp its probably one of my most used bits of kit! (apart from my tea spoon!)
