Interesting. I hadn't seen the BG parang before.
What about recalls for the knife in this thread?
Not sure if this one got recalled - I remember it having a very high failure and replacement rate though due to it not having a full tang AND being apparently suitable for hammering (!)

Hammering? Bizarre
I wouldn't rule it out based on that video or activity.
To be honest I wouldn't buy one but that is down to personal taste not personal experience. Hammering aside, the reviews I've seen have been good.
Most Gerber sharps that I have owned seemed a little on the hard side of things with a propensity to chipping their edges.
BG branded stuff just looks to "Action Man Toy" to me
Strangely enough - if you google images for "action Man toy knife" you will see a picture of a BG knife - so I am not alone it would seem!

I must confess, there was no cuddly toy. Sorry disappoint. I really fancied one of them Ray Mears knives as I figured if it's good enough for him it'll be good enough for me. But good lord £££!!!
It was the early BG knives that had the problem with the handle splitting, in the later knives the problem was fixed.
I've got one, and it's been fine.
It's not a bad knife once you get past the snobbery about the BG issue.
You can, however get far more knife for much less money.

I seem to always make room for a teddy bear in my pack/panniers.
Looking at the picture its the newest version of bg knife. Ie the bg ultimate pro as opposed the the bg ultimate knife.

There have been problems with the parang (now sorted) and some problems with the half tang on the BG Ultimate Survival. Tell you what Col.Decker, if you bust it (in normal use) and can't get it replaced under warranty, I'll send you a Mora Robust or Gerber Paracord gratis.
Gerber made immediate improvements to the parang, not sure about the knife. Personally I prefer a full tang, like the Compact and Paracord knives. Now, I'm a bit of a steel and knife snob and don't even like Gerber. It's just I cannot fault either of the two full tangs I have. They just work. JD did a review a while back on the Compact.

I'm not going to though, hammering almost any knife will break it, except my favourite bushy knife here

The difference is though the Mora's are not described as being suitable for the task.
Nothing wrong with matches and paraffin blocks, but I prefer meths because it smells nicer.
Oh, and I use a lighter.
Are the BG knives? That would seem to be a ridiculous recommendation. Happy to be proved wrong.
I looked on the BG site amongst others, but couldn't find anything about hammering it.

Anyway, I posted in the thread to respond to the point of "there's nothing wrong with BG Gerbers". I think I have proved my point that the manufacturing and design standards on the range are...suspect at best.
Ah ok. Hammer pommel means the pommel can be used to crack nuts, bust glass etc, it's a bit of tang that sticks out. It doesn't mean you can hit the knife with a hammer.
I'd agree, there have been some problems, but Gerber have been quick to address them. As I said, I'm not a Gerber fan, but certain knives in the range work extremely well and I'd recommend them for hard work.

The BG knife has usually come out well when fairly reviewed. It is not my cup of tea due to it's........ well everything really, but as a tool it is quite functional and does the job it should.
