Dark side of the Moon
im thinking of making a bed roll for bushcraft outings, i normally use a foam mat and when its really cold add a 3/4 length issue inflatable type...

what i want is a bed roll to replace this, im not to bothered about size but dont know what to fill it with, something that will keep me nice and warm but wont compress and make me cold during the night...

any ideas as to a filling, i plan to use pertex or gortex for the outer so the filling wont get wet, the bed roll can then be carried rolled up on the back of my pack or loose on its own tied with webbing..

thanks for any ideas.

regards.

chris.

Heres one i made using waterproof canvas on the outside a foam roll inside and a dutch wool banket sewed up like a sleeping bag, i wanted mine spark proof for those clear nights with no tarp just lying next to the fire. It works very well but its large when rolled up i usualy have to carry it in my hand which i dont mind as its not heavy

thats some good work visla, do you still need a sleeping bag with it or is it warm enough without????

i might go for waxed canvas so it can be used near the fire...:)

many thanks.

Heres mine - 1 and 1/2 blankets and a length of silk for the liner the top edge is fitted for velcoing together as a hood and can roll up in a tarp and groundsheet with my down mat to make an old fashioned "shiralee"

Thanks mate iv used all year round in temps down to around 4 and iv been fine but when its below freezing i havnt braved it iv took sleeping bag. Im planning on making another slightly bigger like a duluth one were i can add 1 or 2 blankets. And so it comes apart so i can actualy put it in my Pack exept the foam roll. The canvas i used was recomended by shewie its the canvas off the army stretcher type camp beds two peices. Off ebay but i sewed mine togerther and its a bit tight i should of sewed a 6 inch strip along each side between the two sheets to give it a bit more volume.
RONW? Made a beafy one aswell

looking good John, my main problem is how waterproof it will be as it will be carried on the outside of my kit due to the size....

how well does it keep you warm from the ground in winter John, as this is when it will be having most use...

many thanks.

No bag of any sort keeps you warm from the ground - that is what kip mats are for :)
My Down mat works a treat!
As to waterproofing - wrap it in your groundsheet, tarp or a tough drybag :)

think i might make an all year/winter one, im thinking waxed canvas outer with maybe a foam (floor) inner with some therma loft for the top inside the canvas covered with cotton to allow the heat through, i can then add a blanket or 2 to the pocket as a sleeping bag...

or i might just have it as a bed mat, canvas foam and blanket, all sealed in then just use a dossbag as normal on top, maybe make a canvus pocket so my bag wont get wet...
