Haven't actually done any proper woodcarwing in my life, unless you count carving out a living tree with a fungus rotting away the core :)

Some years ago I came upon a lump in a Rowan and thought that some day it could be something, this week it finally became that something.

This mornig I felt like trying it out with a spoon, it was -15C outside, so was not going to do anything useful in the yard anyway.
Wandered to my neighbours woodcompost (a huge pile of branches right on my border) and foud some Aspen to try it with. Now down to first round of rough sanding. Read the boys here saying I must get it wet a few times and sand a bit more.
But quite happy with the result so far, as it is the first go at this "sport"

That is one Hello of an elegant spoon. Well done. I've carved dozens (70+) of spoons.
So I can appreciate the design and the effort in the work to do it.
The slim handles and the paddle shapes are not strong enough for general use.
Too dang bad but I did some marketing research. My testers wanted to trade for something stronger.
My group of testers wanted 3/4" - 1" handles for mixing thick dough.

Just as soon as I get a lot of Photobucket crap sorted out,
I'll show you what I did in that project.

Are you sure this is your first time? lol

they look great. in the last picture the head of the spoon looks as good as one I would purchase!

apart from the hatchet pictured, what other tools do you use?

nice work, beats my attempts at woodwork!
Some people are good with wood, some are good with Leather. Ever thought of making a Leather Kilt with Saltire, Clan Crest or Lion Rampant impressions added in various places...That would be Awesome.
I would love one but the tools and skills are thus far out of reach for me. Brown Leather would work best. Lot of work getting the Plaits right at the back but i'm sure there is a way around that particular problem.

Yeah, the lump became a kuksa.

Tools used, axe, campsaw, boxknife, cheap carving knife, sandpaper on a shampagne cork.

I've done other things with wood, like build a shed or a birdhouse, but never carved anything.

Looks like a great beginning to a new "marriage." That burl kuksa is one of a kind. Keep making more spoons. They're addictive. Sounds mighty cold there in Finland. Most of my recent ancestors came from there, but I've lived my life in much warmer country. I would love to visit Finland some day though.

I'm a carpenter and joiner who has done woodturning in the course of my work, but, carving is a skill in a class of it's own. For your first attempts you have done a great job, hope to see more to come :)

Thanks lads, very kind of you :)

Got it sanded for the first time and wet again, imagine it will look something similar after oiling than it does wet, just a tad less shiny.

I prefer the term Miss

And cooking the spoon in too high isn't a good idea while one goes to find a brush for the oil...

If I may say, bugger!

ooh yeah, the last stage is usually where the project goes belly-up for me too... I've had spoons split, and "just a little more off here... gaaaah noooo!!!"
you might be able to get a something out of it still!
and as Harvestman and the rest said: nice job with the carving :You_Rock_
... shame about the burning
