Hi everyone, i'm looking for ideas for whittling/carving. i've done spoons, kuksas and few fan tail birds and a few other odd bits. looking for something different to tinker with. just something simple that i can do when i've got half an hour here and there. feel free to post pics or just throw in any ideas you can come up with. cheers

i like the bear, that has appeal.

in Lubkemann's Little Book of whittling (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Little-Book-Whittling-Passing-Trail/dp/1565232747) he has a chapter on whittling a mini dug out canoe using his swiss army knife and a sharpened screw driver.

i cannot find any good links to dala horses but these were traditionally carved by Swedish woodcutters when in camp as toys/gifts for children on their return home. all google images are a bit garish but originally they would have had a tooled finish and may have been much more simply painted. a google images search would give you an idea of the form. a good chapter on them in this book http://www.amazon.co.uk/Celebrating-Birch-Lore-Craft-Ancient/dp/1565233077 but i hope you've got a friend with a copy, look at the price! (if ever i need a new car or house i may have to sell my copy!)
i have not yet made any dala horses, i keep meaning to and will when i get the chance.

all the best

Detailed carving instructions and some history on the Dalecarlian horse can be found in this book.

I took some photos of something our neighbour brought back from Vietnam last year. Basically it's a balancing dragonfly. Anyway took the photos and then realised maybe Google images has something better, which it did.

See below.

I'm not suggesting you need bamboo to do it out of but it'll give you a challenge to make something out of three pieces of wood, a bit of hole drilling, (without a drill) and some crafty paring off of the wood to achieve that perfect balance somehting like this would need.

Anyway just a thought.

How about carving a nameplate? Always a good project. I carved this one awhile back. It doesn't have to be fancy or painted though. I attached mine with two magnets, one glued to the nameplate and one placed inside my shirt.
