Pointy ends, brown skin and quite an orange color inside. That's what I call a yam.
Cube and cook and sub for potatoes in potato salad. The best fries. Inexpensive, too.
So-called sweet potatoes are crap. Kind of potato-looking but rougher starch than a plantain.

I guess that something with more fats for the energy (bacon?) would be a better prospect for a long trip.
 
Hundreds of varieties of Yams. One, a very large root, greyish/ yellowish, is fantastic steamed or in stews/soups. Very nutty flavour.
Has a local name, which I never remember.

The tastiest potatoes are the Scandinavian Mandel potatoes, the best ones are grown on south facing plots in the Arctic. Small, dense, juicy.
Unfortunately difficult to find and expensive.

God created them to be paired with thin breadcakes, fermented herring and thinky sliced onions.
