What did you buy today?

  • BushMoot: Come along to the amazing Summer Moot 31st July - 5th August (extended Moot : 27th July - 8th August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I tried the bum bag out today, I actually really liked it, I don't think it's as conspicuous as I was concerned about, and it was comfortable, I even forgot I had it on getting back in to the car after the walk. Weather was a bit wet.

They're undoubtedly a very sensible invention, I spent a fair bit of time bumming about SE Asia and couldn't have got by easily without one.

Mine wasn't purple though

And of course this, before anyone gets their knickers in a twist :D

Though the way they’re sold in pairs on Amazon as ‘walkie talkies’, you’d easily not know you need a license.
Is that a Baofeng UV-5R? If you're using it as a PMR446 radio, then you should be ok, although I'm not sure what the situation is with regard to device certification. The stories in some countries (according to what I've read) take a dim view of those Chinese walkie talkies because they "leak" radio noise outside the frequency range of the channel that they are set to transmit on.

This is a UV-5RM - it’s way too powerful to legally use to transmit on PMR446 without a license, which I believe is limited to 0.5w. I also think you’re not allowed to use a transmitter with detachable antenna or which can be programmed to other frequencies on PMR446, but I might be wrong on that one.

You’re right that some people aren’t a fan of these radios (importantly these are not walkie talkies), though I think this is primarily aimed at the older ones as the newer ones are less leaky. There’s also an element of general snobbery and gatekeeping towards the cheaper radios amongst some in the Amateur Radio world which I am not interested in humouring.

Yes, make sure you get a license. One press of the PTT button without a license and you will have government official at your door withing ten minutes!

On a serious note, I enjoy listening to my Baofengs, I have a UV-5R and a UV5RH with 'air band', which I can use to listen to passing aircraft. Have also listened to the repeater on the ISS space station a few times, and I have a local repeater that is very active.

I have had Baofengs, and the Foundation book for a few years or so but have yet to actually study and take the Foundation test. I really should get it done.

This is mainly in the USA, which have waaaaaay stricter criteria than other countries, or certainly the UK, in terms of the amount of leakage. A Baofeng is well within the range allowed in the UK.

Picked up a realy nice, almost new, gortex jacket, in olive green, for a tenner at the local charity shop.
Perfect for wetness. :)
And, buying your chair seemed to enable me to buy the same chair, and I don't even need another chair. It just looked so comfy :)

Oh Rich!
Enjoy the journal while you sit in your new chair!
(And nobody else has a clue what we are talking about, or how it computes..hee hee.)

Now you've got me thinking I need a new camping table, to put the journal on, and a cup of tea. My old and flimsy one got squashed by a clumsy grandson who stepped backward, knocked it over spilling everyone's drinks, and then fell backwards onto the frame.

Perhaps I'd best put that off for now, at the end of the sitting out weather.

I finally gave in and ordered a Higonokami mini as I love the old style blades and a viperade leather knife pouch in brown off HH to put my Tbs Badger knife in
I've tried to make these types of knives in the past, but they look alot simpler to make than they are the thumb stop is the problem.

The Viperade pouches are nice, I have a couple of the nylon ones and always liked the look on the leather slips.

Today, after my OneTigris 'accidental' chair and table purchase thanks to @Woody girl asking me to order her a chair, I've spent a few quid on some backpack elastics for a criss cross mesh to tuck a wet coat outside the main pack, and a few of the web dominator type strap tidies.

And a Roughneck crowbar for some stubborn oak deer protectors that need to come out, and won't with a hammer and bolster.

Another batch of brown willow for basketry. Musgroves is obviously clearing their warehouse out, a few varieties/sizes I have been waiting for were back in stock.... and it's the last of the 2024/25 harvest that's being sold, once gone it will be April/May 2026 when the 2025/26 harvest starts becoming available (they cut in December/Jan then it needs to dry).

Spent today unpacking, labelling and storing it. Got a good range of sizes and varieties now to keep me occupied :)
