Hi, Before you dive into looking at the pix be sure to take the time to read the text in this posting please, this will avoid confusion OK? Thanks.

A couple of months ago I sold a Take Down axe to Wildgoose, a member on here after he took a fancy to the rusty lump of metal that was in the pic below. He chose head number 5. (Heads 1 &2 are provisionally sold/traded as well.)

This is how it looked after I'd cleaned it up, fitted a new hickory handle to it and sharpened the edge till it could split atoms with ease. Who needs Oppenhiemer? :lmao:

I had several PMs afterwards about these axes and pre-sold and traded a couple.

Then Cowboy posted and comment saying he'd like to see the stash of old tools I have secreted under my bench. Well my bench has moved a few times since that posting, but the other day I emptied out the box in my mate's workshop. Here it is pre-clean up stage. I had all the axes heads and such sitting in a vat of water for the past 2 months soaking off the caked on rust. I saw a tutorial on youtube about it and me being basically a lazy sod it seemed a good idea.

This is how they looked after I hooked them out, wiped the black and/or red sludge off and dried them in the sunshine.

Five heads waiting in the queue for a vigorous brush up.

Pic if the during process on a socket headed bearded axe. Incidentally that wire bursh attachment on my grinder is now as bald as me! :lmao:

Here she is all cleaned up. Pretty eh?

This is as far as I got two weeks ago when I took the photo.

Last Wednesday I spent the whole day putting edges on each of them so that they're all nice and sharp. Some are shaving sharp. I fitted new handles to two billhooks too. All these heads are now blacked up with stove blacking polish to keep the rust at bay and are now waiting for their new hickory handles to be shaped and fitted.

I shall be bringing most of these to the Moot for selling on the bring and buy table or traders day. However the two tomahawk heads in the top row far right are provisionally sold already, The rest are up for grabs eventually.

Hope you like what you see. Another example of Axe porn ... here's another from Hugo

You know Dad, I can't help but look at the workshop photographs and wonder when you're going to appear on the news and Crimewatch, with a neighbour saying. " Il était un homme tranquille, nous ne savions jamais sur les corps."

You are a bad man Aaron, teasing us all like that.

I've been using my axe all day to process some pretty tough timber and it's still sharp enough to shave.

Thanks for the comments chaps. I like playing on these sort of restoration projects, once the thing is completed it gives me an immense sense of satisfaction, as I'm sure any of you who have taken the time to restore a tool knows so well. Passing it on to someone who appreciates that tool is the cherry on top.

Steve (Mesquite) Tomahawk head 2 is earmarked for trading to Pignut who is making me a part for my overhand planer... when I get my finger out and get the design specs to him. Sorry. You can see what else I have in a couple of weeks time.

Oh how I miss Drew's comments now listing how many sleep there are till the moot. :(

Really pleased to read you're getting some use out of that axe Wildgoose, no surprise the edge is still shaving sharp either. Old tools were built to last. And I'm patiently waiting for that review of it too. C'mon, I'm eager to read it!!

Aladdin's cave indeed, Colin. I have a lamp as well but that's not up for sale at any price MUHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

You're right Hamsih, I'm picky about what I buy and restore too, so many rocks in the pile before you find the diamond.

Zingmo - Everybody needs another axe ... g'wan g'wan g'wan :lmao:

Hey Son more like "Qui était cet homme beau avec la hache qui est venu à notre secours?" (thank heavens for google translate)

Those socketed bearded axes are fascinating pieces Aaron - I do like seeing your finds as the continental stuff is very different (in form if not function) from the UK stuff. Its a good job I don't do big meets, or I would be sorely tempted! I remember seeing a big goose wing axe in one of your pictures....I came over all unnecessary

Damnn... I fell for the trap and couldn't even Bare the wait of the first line before I had a peek at the pictures... Is it bad that we are that predictable? Lol :)

Mate I'm utterly speechless.. All I can say is Bravo!! What an amazing job you've made from some beautiful bits of old steel.. Here's to the next life!!
