The steel is biodegradable but the soap will kill fish by the thousands so use with care.

You could take one of these which will shift the soot

Just an addition to the "just wipe it off and stuff it in a plastic bag" advice...I have nesting billies and try to put each one in a thin plastic bag, then "nest" them together, so that the soot from the outside of one isn't transfered to the inside of another.
Gets a bit fiddly and messy though.

if your gonna cook with the one on the outside chances are you'll have a fire\stove of sorts, just heat it up, and knock out the dried bits, jobs a goodden

I wipe them off in the moss or grass. takes care of the loose soot. The rest stays where it is.
