I've always loved the look of the classic Sami knife and after seeing Wayland's at the Chedworth meet it's increased my interest even more.
I've been having a bit of a search round to look at the different styles and patterns carved into the reindeer antler. The variety is amazing. There are 2 distinct styles. The North Sami has a sheath with an almost 90 degree bend in the lower antler section whereas the South Sami-style has an antler section that is more gentle. Apart from that, I have seen no obvious distinction.
Here are a few of the pictures I have saved:
I've been through BB, BCUK, kniv-per's shop and brisa, plus random sites I've ound.
Does anyone have any good sites with pictures on?
I'm not looking for just knives, but any Sami handicraft work as I find it amazing. The scrimshaw work they do is mindblowing. Can you imagine doing all the work of making a piece then having to spend all that time scrimshawing it afterwards - one slip could be devastating!
Check these out:
I would be interested in any sites that talk about Sami culture and history too.
