Can anyone explain to me a good method of putting up a tarp? Or a link to one?

I bought a nice tarp with eyelets in it, and I intend on using it this year instead of my tent. Is there specific knots to use? I'd need to get it off of the ground a few feet so I suppose I'd make a stake anyway....

Thanks!

Hi Floyd
Im no expert but theres a very good bit in RM's Bushcraft book his take is that all the knots are quick release but can give tension to keep your tarp tight. Ive tried these out and they work great the only extra I added was a classic prussic knot tied to the tarp where it connects to the main guide rope this gives extra tension.
Hope this helps and I haven't just confused you more. :D Ed

Thanks guys, to be honest what I need is to go practice really! Its impossible to learn from a book. I appreciate the tips.

I had just done a google search five mins ago Wayland and your site was the first thing I ended up on! The first three are certainly ideal setups with the hammock and fire :D

There are a few pictures on my site that might help.

As far as knots go use something you can tie and untie in the dark with rail trickling down your neck.

Thats a cool website you have there Wayland.

the best way to learn how is to rig a tarp up is to get out there and have a go at it your self .you can read books and look at dvds on the subject. that will help but hands on is best ,

depends if its a retangular or square tarp; if square, u can use a diamond shape, if the other use the middle eyelets and do from there; then use the 4 corners to tye it down

most advice is already given. All I can add some pictures and: go out there with a book, tarp and rope. look closely, take your time and try. It might take you all day to figure out in wich way you like to tie your tarp. but eventually, with some practice it will become a 10 minute job :) The most important thing is to take your time. But that aplies to almost everything.

Below I have some pictures from doing the same: going out and trying. It was with a poncho, but that's allmost the same. I like the parachutestyle the best. If something's unclear you can always pm me for clearer pictures as these are downsized.

at one point the tarp was streched so tight that 2 of the rings ruptured. So I just tied a simple knot. not pretty, but effective.

Most knots you need can be found in:

p.s. sorry for the amount of pictures. I realised it might be overkill when I finished posting them :D
