I have actually modelled my kit based on the accounts of a half a dozen people who were lost in the taiga or tundra in or near Finland during the 20th century.

In the most serious survival situation that I have been in, I'd have been dead had it not been for the well trained and quick thinking folk who were with me, that and the Swedish Air Rescue chaps and the frankly quite wonderful Swedish Health Service.

Here is a pic of the rescue chopper attempting to land.

All this was down to myself choosing to use an alternative breaking system on a snow-mobile (using my skull to arrest forward movement by bouncing it off a tree).
