Have you thought of cutting your own babiche from doggy chews?
I have dome some and although it takes a bit of time and is not the nicest of things to do it is cheap.
Get big chews, soak em to soften them, dry them to to point where they are "leathery" and not TOO slimey, then cut them in a spiral to the width of lace you want. Oil them (Neatsfoot oil) to preserve the leather and keep them supple.

It depends on the dog chew and how wide you cut the wangs!
I have got a piece soaking in oil at the moment aprox 10 feet long, about 5mm wide x 1.5 mm thick, twisted into a cord.
But it was a big chew....
