Here's a question for you knife makers and bladesmiths. I've noticed some lovely maker's stamps on most of the hand made knifes I've seen both here and on BB.

Question: How do you make them, and how do you use them? By that, I mean can you buy them or is it always a DIY job? And do you stamp them into the blade while it's hot, or can you cold stamp before hardening and tempering?

Thanks in advance,

Eric

I've always loved those stamps Stuart - and being in the 'family' can you tell me how they are made? - part of me expects by hand as they are one offs but the accuracy is soo good I assume a machine is employed.....

I stamp mine after I'm 90 % finished the blade in the annealed state. The next step would be hardening.
For special knives my partner and I will make our own. Stamps but they are hard to make last for us. The problem we have is the recovered steel we use has a molybdenum content.
We had two made a while back, very nice but expensive. We sent them a design and they copied the design excactly. They are cobalt and show no sign of wearing out.
We make all our own leather stamps and wood and leather brands.

My previous and current stamps were made by Davisons (?) of sheffield (0114 2724584). Dunno how the prices compare with others, but both of mine were about £50 and they arrived a wek or two after ordering. The first was dictated over teh phone and the second, being an image, was posted on paper and they sent teh made up stamp over.

I had mine made at Davidsons as well, they were fairly inexpensive but that's because I asked for a standard font with no custom graphics. They arrived about 2 weeks later. I use them on steel blades but also on leather although they are a bit small. I had them for about a year and they are going fine.

They did the medals for the Commonwealth Games in Manchester so I'm sure they can do quite complex graphics.
