I must say I know nothing about it, but the way grants are nowadays is so different in the UK from when I was younger. It is apparently a recognised way to fund yourself. Universitys actually have a team that will advise and help on this. We need to keep investing in the education of the young. In the past it was through taxation and you had no choice but to contribute. This way you can choose to or not as is your want. You can aim it at family and friends or the wider community. My new friend made a donation to this chap and her repayment was low payed work until she took him on full time. Apparently you need to offer something in return. She was telling me how her daughter had crowd funded a soap making business and offered free soap to her investors. Don't dissmiss the idea.
