I have a similar issue with my homemade underblanket. It is at the moment a kind of 'medium' blue - not too offensive but I want to go more natural. I suspect that I will need to go darker rather that greener so am expecting the end result to be towards a brownish colour.

I am thinking dye rather than paint and also natural rather than synthetic so remembering how badly blackberry stains material I'm thinking along the lines of a bucketful of late season, big old squishy berries, chuck the underblanket in and give it a good beating.

Is this a bad idea and why please?

Yes very bad idea! Think of how much alcohilc balckberry brew you could make! May not hold on a synthetic, my tent is purest ployester with a pu coating. Hence the spray paint.
